Jawaban singkat

  • Malaysia has CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile and Unifi Mobile networks, and a plan that names its network tells you whose signal you are buying.
  • Cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang suit a standard plan, but Borneo and highland trips call for a check on the network name and coverage first.
  • If you cross by road from Hat Yai or Padang Besar, turn off data roaming on your Thai SIM before the border and switch the Malaysia eSIM on after you cross.

This guide draws on each brand's published plans, policies and help pages as of October 2026. It is not based on a test trip, and it lists no prices because they change weekly. This site also sells eSIMs, so it appears as one option.

Mobile networks in Malaysia

Malaysia has CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile and TM's Unifi Mobile. Our eSIM plans use CelcomDigi, Maxis or U Mobile depending on the plan, and the plan page names the network. We do not list Unifi Mobile in our plans.

Third-party reports say Malaysia shut down 3G from the end of 2021 into early 2022. We have not confirmed that with the operators, so make sure your phone supports 4G or VoLTE.

Brands compared by pricing model

PilihanPricing modelApa yang harus diperiksa
AIS SIM2FlyCountry or zone packs on a separate AIS numberUse abroad within 60 days of opening; Thai ID to register
True GO Travel MyPlanChoose country, days and data; a separate TrueMove H numberNo bundled calls or SMS; 128 Kbps after the quota
AiraloCountry or regional fixed-GB packs, and unlimited that slows after 3 GB a dayMany plans accept top-ups, and the app has many languages
HolaflyPriced by days, unlimited with a fair-use clauseLimited hotspot, no top-ups, and no Thai-language site
NomadFixed-GB packs, and Unlimited that is mostly about 2 GB a day at full speedThai help centre exists; Unlimited is non-refundable
This sitePriced in THB; plans vary by days and GBNo app, QR by email, self-service refund within 14 days if not installed

No pricing model is always cheapest, so compare the current price for your exact dates. A short trip often comes out better on a fixed-GB pack, while a long trip with heavy hotspot use may suit a daily plan.

  • The network name stated on the plan page, so you can compare it with what your lodging recommends.
  • Whether the plan starts counting days at installation or on the first connection in Malaysia.
  • Hotspot and top-up terms, since some brands limit the hotspot or no longer offer top-ups.
  • The refund rule if you never install it.

Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Borneo and the highlands

We have no coverage-map data for each Malaysian network, so we do not say which is stronger where. In cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang a standard plan usually does the job. Borneo and the highlands include mountain and forest areas where the signal can differ by network.

  • Read the network name on the plan page, then ask your lodging or tour organiser which network works well in that area.
  • For trips across several states or up into the hills, download offline maps and save bookings on the phone.
  • If you travel alone in remote areas, share your route with someone at home in advance.

For more on data away from main routes, see “Connectivity off the beaten track: what to expect”.

Driving in from Hat Yai or Padang Besar

Border areas can pick up signal from both countries, so a Thai SIM may roam on its own. Before the checkpoint, turn off data roaming on the Thai SIM and check whether your Thai carrier's roaming pack covers Malaysia. After you cross, switch on the Malaysia eSIM as your main data line.

  1. 1Before the checkpointInstall the Malaysia eSIM in advance and turn off data roaming on the Thai SIM.
  2. 2After crossingSelect the eSIM for mobile data, turn on its data roaming, and wait until a Malaysian network name appears.
  3. 3Test your appsOpen a map or ride-hailing app before you leave the checkpoint area.

If you want to keep your Thai number across the border, AIS has Ready2Fly packs and True and dtac have GO Travel roaming packs on your existing number. Check that the pack covers Malaysia and when it starts counting days before you buy. A data-only eSIM suits travellers who do not need another number.

Malaysia's entry rules may include an advance registration or digital arrival card. We have no confirmed source on this, so check the official immigration website before you travel; last checked October 2026. A 30-day visa exemption for Thai passport holders comes from third-party sources and should be confirmed.

Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan

FAQ

Which Malaysian network is best?+

We have no confirmed coverage data, so we do not rank them. See which network the plan names and ask your lodging in the area you are visiting.

Can one eSIM cover Malaysia and Singapore?+

Some plans list both countries on the plan page, so check before you buy, then read “One eSIM for Singapore and Malaysia: How to Choose”.

Does a data-only eSIM come with a Malaysian number?+

No. A data-only plan has no local number, so keep your Thai SIM on for bank OTP messages.

Can I get a refund if I have not used it?+

It depends on the brand. On this site you can request a refund yourself within 14 days if the eSIM is not installed. Check other brands' current terms before buying.
