Jawaban singkat

  • Thai nationals need a Schengen visa before entering the Schengen area, and one short-stay visa is generally valid in all 29 member countries.
  • Apply to the embassy or visa centre of the country where you will stay longest, no earlier than 6 months and normally at least 15 days before the trip.
  • The visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and each embassy decides its own applications, so follow that embassy's own checklist.

A Schengen visa is what Thai passport holders need before a trip to Europe's Schengen area. The European Commission says one short-stay visa is generally valid in all 29 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You apply to your main destination, no earlier than 6 months and normally at least 15 days before travel.

Do Thai citizens need a Schengen visa?

Yes. The EU Delegation to Thailand states that Thai nationals are required to obtain a visa to enter the Schengen area, and the European Commission says the countries whose nationals need a visa are listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806.

This guide covers the short-stay type C visa for brief trips. Long-stay type D visas are national visas applied for at the embassy itself; the Embassy of Italy in Bangkok, for example, separates the two channels clearly.

Visa rules and procedures change. The details here were last checked in November 2026, so confirm them on the official site of the embassy or visa centre of your destination before you apply.

Which countries does a Schengen visa cover?

The Schengen area has 29 countries: 25 EU member states plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, according to the European Commission. Bulgaria and Romania were the last to join, on 1 January 2025.

The Commission says all Schengen countries apply the same visa rules, so the visa is generally valid for every one of them. The number of entries is printed on the visa, and total stay may not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

IrlandiaSpecial exemption from Schengen rules. Your Europe says EU visa rules do not apply in Ireland, so check Irish requirements separately
Inggris RayaNot in Schengen; separate rules apply. See “How to Apply for a UK Visa from Thailand: Steps and eVisa”

How do you apply for a Schengen visa from Thailand, step by step?

The usual order is: choose a main destination, fill in the online form, book an appointment at the visa centre, then submit documents and fingerprints. Each embassy runs a slightly different system.

  1. 1Pick the main destinationWork out where you will spend the longest time. A separate guide in this series explains the main-destination rule in detail.
  2. 2Open that embassy's checklistEach embassy decides its own applications and may ask for more documents. Use the checklist of the embassy or its official visa centre for your case.
  3. 3Fill in the online formThe Netherlands issues an online code, Denmark uses ApplyVisa, France uses France-Visas, and Switzerland asks for the form before the appointment.
  4. 4Book the visa centre appointmentSeveral embassies in Thailand use VFS Global, including Germany, Italy, Sweden and Denmark, while Spain works with BLS International. The Commission says external visa centres may collect applications for consulates.
  5. 5Submit documents and fingerprintsBring your passport and the checklist documents. Fingerprints are taken when you apply.
  6. 6Wait for the decision and collect the passportTrack the status through the channel the embassy names, and avoid non-refundable bookings until you have the result.

How far ahead can you apply, and how long does a decision take?

Article 9(1) of the EU Visa Code says you apply no more than 6 months before the trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before it. The normal decision time is 15 calendar days from a complete application, extendable to 45 in individual cases.

ItemOfficial rule
Earliest filing6 months before the trip
Latest filing, as a rule15 calendar days before the trip
Normal decision time15 calendar days, not working days
Longest decision timeUp to 45 calendar days in individual cases
PasporValid at least 3 months after you leave Schengen, with two blank pages, issued within the previous 10 years
Denmark's foreign ministry notes that some cases are sent to Copenhagen and can take up to 45 days, so do not wait until the last moment. No one can promise an outcome or a timeline beyond what the rules state.

How many days can you stay, and what is changing?

The maximum is 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries as one period. If your visa sticker allows fewer than 90 days, follow the sticker. Four related points are worth knowing.

  • The Commission says the Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, replaces passport stamping, and stores only a facial image for visa holders such as Thais.
  • ETIAS is not yet in operation and is meant for visa-exempt nationals. Thais need a Schengen visa, not ETIAS.
  • The Royal Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the Commission approved a Visa Cascade for Thai nationals on 8 May 2026, allowing longer multiple-entry visas, but stresses that it is not a visa exemption.
  • The Commission says a digital visa will replace the visa sticker through a common EU online platform after a 7-year transition. For now, treat it as a planned change.

Why do your phone and internet matter during a Schengen visa application?

Almost every step runs on your phone: the online form, the visa centre booking, confirmation emails or OTP codes, and tracking the application. Keep the email address and number you used reachable the whole time.

Once in Europe, border officers may ask to see accommodation or onward tickets, and bookings saved on your phone that open instantly make that easier. Sort out mobile data before you fly; “Preparing for a Multi-Country Europe Trip: Which Internet to Use, SIM or eSIM” goes deeper.
