What Riyadh is like on a phone

Riyadh is a city of wide roads and long distances, where one destination sits kilometres from the next. Most visitors come for work, for a conference, or as a stop before somewhere else. Almost all movement is by ride-hailing app, now helped by a new metro that cuts through the worst of the traffic. Urban coverage is dense and continuous; note that calling through some apps may not behave the way it does at home, and this varies by network and by service.

When you land

King Khalid International (RUH) sits north of the city, thirty to forty-five minutes from the centre depending on traffic, with separate terminal buildings — check the number on your ticket before ordering a car. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft, because the app pickup bays are signposted separately and you will need to confirm your spot with the driver. Arriving by intercity train puts you at a station inside the city, where a car is easy to get straight away.

Where coverage changes

The office spine along King Fahd Road, the Olaya district and the big malls are all strong indoors and in the car parks. The new metro generally carries service in stations and underground, though a deep interchange slows briefly. In historic Diriyah, with its mud-brick walls, the line weakens once you are into the inner lanes. Head out toward the escarpment west of the city and it thins steadily, disappearing for stretches when you drop into the valley.

What a day here costs in data

A working day here runs about 2–3GB: repeated ride-hailing, navigation between buildings, and usually a laptop tethered in a car or a café. Long video meetings push that toward 4GB. A pure sightseeing day is lighter, roughly 1–1.5GB, since most of it is spent in a vehicle. On weekend evenings, when the malls and restaurant strips fill, uploads slow even on full bars.

• Olaya — The central business strip of hotels, office towers and malls; steady enough for online meetings, with metro stops that let you skip the rush-hour crawl.
• Diriyah — The restored mud-brick historic quarter north-west of the centre; thick walls weaken the line in the inner lanes, so save your entry ticket to the phone before you arrive.
• Tahlia Street & the dining strips — The café and restaurant street, busy from evening until late; parking is scarce at weekends, so it is faster to be dropped at one end and walk.
• King Abdullah Financial District — The northern high-rise district with elevated walkways between towers; check the building name and the correct entrance in advance, since map pins tend to land at the perimeter rather than a door.

Day trips out of the city

• The Edge of the World escarpment — An hour and a half to two hours north-west, ending on graded track where the line disappears entirely; go with someone who knows the route, tell others your return time, and do not start late in the afternoon.
• AlUla by domestic flight — About two hours in the air and better as an overnight than a same-day return; check the schedule ahead, since some seasons have fewer flights, and keep the boarding pass saved offline.
• The Red Sands dunes — An hour west to the line of red dunes; there is service by the roadside but none once you walk in among them, and on evenings locals come out in numbers — fix a clear parking spot with your group before splitting up.
