What a year in Саудын Араб looks like

Saudi Arabia does not run on one season. Riyadh, up on the central plateau, is dry heat with genuinely cold winter nights; Jeddah on the Red Sea is humid most of the year and barely cools; and the Asir highlands around Abha catch enough monsoon influence to sit under low cloud and rain in the very months the rest of the country bakes. Heritage places like AlUla and the desert archaeological sites therefore have a clear cool-weather season. The pilgrimage season moves through the calendar year by year and reshapes flight loads and hotel availability wherever it falls, so check that year's calendar before fixing dates.

The year, in windows

• November to December — This is when AlUla and the northern deserts come into their own: comfortable daytime walking among the carved tombs, nights cold enough for a proper coat. Festivals and open-air concerts cluster in these weeks, and the small pool of rooms near the heritage sites fills faster than in the big cities. Riyadh is pleasant now too, with outdoor cafes back in use.
• January to February — The coldest weeks of the year. Riyadh and the interior plateau can drop close to freezing on a clear night in some years, while Jeddah stays warm enough to swim. What rain the centre of the country gets tends to arrive now in short episodes, and when it lands on a wadi the water can move fast. These are the best months for long desert drives, with cool cabins and no midday heat to plan around.
• March to April — A transition that stays workable while warming quickly. After a wet winter the desert can flower, and locals drive out to see it, though it does not happen every year. Dust winds from the north blow through in these weeks and knock visibility down for days at a time. It suits travellers who want to dodge the queues of peak season without yet meeting full summer heat.
• May to September — The heaviest heat of the year in the centre and east, where time outdoors in the middle of the day has to be rationed rather than planned. The Red Sea coast is less extreme but much more humid. The interesting exception is the Asir highlands, which turn into the country's own summer escape under low cloud, mist and intermittent rain — Abha and the ridge-top villages are at their busiest exactly when everywhere else is at its hottest.
• October — Heat begins to loosen its grip, and this is the month people who know the country tend to pick. The heritage sites are walkable again in the morning and late afternoon before high season properly begins, and Red Sea diving has good visibility with the water still warm. Rooms around AlUla can still be found without a scramble.

The weeks to aim for

For most visitors the answer is November to March, the only stretch when desert, old cities and coast all work at once. If AlUla or the rock-cut sites are the point of the trip, aim at November to February and book early, because the supply of rooms out there is genuinely small. If you want the side of the country outsiders rarely see, the Asir highlands in July and August are at their greenest and coolest — a completely different trip from a desert one, and best treated as its own itinerary rather than a detour.

The weeks to avoid

June to August in Riyadh, the interior deserts and the Gulf coast is where travellers report getting through less than half of what they planned. The heat is not merely uncomfortable; it removes most of the usable outdoor hours from each day. If the dates cannot move, shift everything to dawn and after dark and give the middle of the day to museums or the hotel. Separately, when the pilgrimage season falls, domestic flights and western-region hotels tighten sharply — check that year's calendar before booking anything at all.

What the season does to a data plan

Coverage in the main cities is fast and dependable, but this is a country where you spend more time on long road transfers than most people expect, and the desert stretches between cities include gaps that run for tens of kilometres. Download offline maps and the full route before every drive, not just the first one. On winter desert camping nights, cold drains a battery faster than usual, so carry a power bank and keep the phone near you rather than in the tent pocket. Summer flips the problem: a phone left on the dashboard in the sun will throttle itself and refuse to charge exactly when you need navigation. In the Asir highlands, signal along the escarpment roads drops in and out with the terrain rather than with the mist, so treat the offline map as the primary one up there.
