When to visit China: pick by season and region, and which holidays to avoid

Kort antwoord

  • Autumn suits many regions, spring comes next, and summer brings heat and rain.
  • Choose by region: the north is bitterly cold in winter, Yunnan is cool most of the year, and the south is hot and humid.
  • Avoid Golden Week (1–7 October), Chinese New Year and the early-May holiday, when crowds are heavy and tickets sell out.

The big picture: China is too large for one season

China is enormous. Harbin in the north can sit far below freezing in January while Nanning or Shenzhen in the south stay mild, so no single month suits the whole country. Pick the month by region first, then adjust for the holidays when Chinese domestic travel peaks.

Broadly, autumn (late September to November) works well for many regions, followed by spring (April to May). Summer brings heat and rain, and winter suits the south or the ice festivals of the north.

Season by region

The north: Beijing, Xi'an, Harbin

Beijing is best in spring and autumn, when skies are often clear and the temperature is comfortable. Summer is hot, humid and prone to heavy rain, while winter is cold and dry but gives you the Great Wall under snow. Xi'an is similar, and autumn suits a walk on its ancient city wall. Harbin (哈尔滨) is famous for its winter ice and snow festival and needs serious cold-weather gear.

The south and east coast: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou

Shanghai and Hangzhou have an early-summer rainy spell (known as meiyu) around June, then turn very hot, so spring and autumn work best. Guangzhou and Shenzhen are hot and humid most of the year, with rain and typhoon risk in late summer. Late year into early year is more comfortable.

The southwest: Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhangjiajie, Guilin

Chengdu is often cloudy and damp, so spring and autumn are nicer. Chongqing gets extremely hot in midsummer. Zhangjiajie and Guilin are lovely in misty spring and clear autumn, though the rainy season can hide the views in cloud.

Yunnan: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang

Yunnan sits on a plateau and stays cool and pleasant much of the year. Kunming is nicknamed the Spring City. The dry months from late October to April give the best skies, and the rains fall around mid-year. Lijiang is high, so nights are cool even in summer; always bring a windproof layer.

Peak holiday periods to avoid

  • Golden Week, 1–7 October (National Day): trains and hotels sell out early and major sights are packed.
  • Chinese New Year or Spring Festival (late January to February, dates change each year) is the biggest homecoming rush, and many businesses close for days.
  • The May Day holiday in early May (several days off) and the summer school break also bring crowds.
  • If you cannot avoid them, book trains and lodging early and expect long queues.
China's public holidays are announced by the government each year and may include make-up working days. Last checked October 2026. Confirm the latest holiday calendar with official sources or the Chinese embassy before booking.

Linking cities to the season

For multi-city trips, order the route by climate. In autumn, start in Beijing and Xi'an then head south to Chengdu or Yunnan. In early year, begin in the south to dodge the harshest cold. High-speed trains make it easy to rearrange the route if rain or a cold snap arrives.

  • Keep at least one spare day for outdoor viewpoints such as Zhangjiajie or Guilin.
  • Check the forecast a few days ahead before buying the next train ticket.
  • Southern rain is often an afternoon shower rather than all-day, so plan outdoor activities for the morning.

What to pack by season

  1. 1SummerBreathable clothes, an umbrella, hat, sunscreen and non-slip shoes, since rain often arrives suddenly.
  2. 2Lente en herfstLight layers plus a jacket, since mornings and evenings differ a lot.
  3. 3Northern winterA down jacket, gloves, a wool hat, thick socks, and moisturiser for the dry air.
  4. 4Southern winterA light coat and rain jacket, as some rooms lack heating.

How weather affects data use

Rain and cold keep you in cafes and hotels, so you tend to use maps, restaurant searches and translation more often. Cold also drains phone batteries faster, so carry a power bank and keep the phone in an inner pocket outdoors.

Before departure, install an eSIM over home Wi-Fi, turn on data roaming for its line, and keep the Thai SIM on for SMS. Foreign apps usually open on an eSIM that routes data outside the mainland, but nobody can guarantee every app on every network, so test before relying on it. See our connection guides.
