Seven and ten days in the UK: which cities, and how to link London, York, Edinburgh and Cardiff

Kort antwoord

  • A 7 day UK trip suits four or five days in London plus day trips or one extra city, while 10 days comfortably adds York and Edinburgh.
  • Trains are the main link: London to York and Edinburgh leave from King's Cross, and Cardiff trains leave from Paddington in about 2 hours.
  • One Standard Visitor visa covers the whole UK, but mobile signal can drop in rural and mountain areas.

A 7 day UK trip works best as four or five days in London plus day trips to Oxford or Bath, and 10 days lets you add York and Edinburgh without rushing. One UK Standard Visitor visa covers England, Scotland and Wales, so no extra permission is needed to move between them.

Where should you go on a 7 day UK trip?

With seven days, base yourself in London, which has the most sights and is the rail hub, and choose only one or two other places so travel time does not eat the trip.

Can 10 days add Scotland and Wales?

Yes, if you pick one direction. Five days in London, one night in York and three in Edinburgh is the most balanced northern route. Wales suits half a day to a day in Cardiff, or a mountain trip into Eryri National Park, which officially uses the Welsh name for Snowdonia.

  • Northern route: London 5 nights, York 1 night, Edinburgh 3 nights, then return to London for the flight home.
  • Western route: London 5 nights, Bath 1 night, Cardiff or Eryri 2 nights, then back to London.
  • Consider an open-jaw ticket, flying into Heathrow and out of Edinburgh, if your airline offers it, to avoid backtracking.

How do you move between cities, by train or hire car?

Trains are the easiest way to link major cities. Check times on National Rail Enquiries and buy through operator sites or apps such as Trainline. A hire car suits rural areas such as the Highlands and north Wales; drive on the left as in Thailand.

Railcards depend on age or travel group, not nationality, so some visitors may be eligible; check the conditions on the National Rail site. BritRail passes are only for non-UK residents and must be bought before arriving in Britain.

Timetables, weekend engineering works and ticket rules change. This was last checked in October 2026, so confirm with National Rail and each operator before buying tickets.

Which airport should you fly into for a multi-city trip?

Most Thai travellers land at Heathrow (LHR) for its direct and connecting flights. From Heathrow, the Elizabeth line reaches Paddington in about 28 minutes, which is the London station for Bath, Oxford and Cardiff trains. Gatwick (LGW) has the Gatwick Express to Victoria in about 30 minutes, and Stansted (STN) has the Stansted Express to Liverpool Street in about 45 to 50 minutes. If Scotland is your main goal, compare flights straight into Edinburgh (EDI) or Glasgow (GLA).

What should you book and prepare before you leave?

  1. Apply for the Standard Visitor visa on gov.uk up to 3 months before travel, and check the current fee and processing time on the official site.
  2. Link your eVisa to a UKVI account, because the UK no longer issues visa stickers to new applicants, and travel on the passport linked to that account.
  3. Book rooms and rail for popular periods early, especially Edinburgh in summer.
  4. Set up contactless payment for London and always touch in and out with the same card or device.

How do you pace the trip and pick the season?

Long summer daylight makes far day trips workable, but winter days are short and dark falls early, especially in Scotland, so plan fewer stops per day. Rain is possible all year, so pack a waterproof layer and comfortable shoes, and leave one spare day for delayed trains or heavy weather.

How does internet use work on a multi-city trip, and where does signal drop?

The main UK networks are EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, and Ofcom states all have completed their 3G switch-offs, so phones need 4G or 5G. Signal is good in cities but drops in the Highlands, Eryri and other rural areas. TfL says London Underground station Wi-Fi is tied to UK networks, so visitors on foreign SIMs may not connect; mobile coverage underground is expanding, but some tunnels still have no signal.

  • Download offline maps for York, Edinburgh and Eryri before leaving.
  • Keep rail tickets and bookings available offline, and use apps such as Trainline or TfL Go.
  • Check that your eSIM's country list includes the United Kingdom, which Europe plans may not.

If you plan to add Paris by Eurostar, read “Europe eSIM: one regional plan or a stack of single-country plans?”, because a UK visa does not allow entry to the Schengen area.
