In Mattancherry's thick-walled old buildings, deep interiors slow down. Heading south out of the city into the canal and paddy country, coverage follows the villages rather than the road.

• Athirappilly Falls — Two hours north-east through rubber plantations and forest; the last stretch thins, and the falls are loud enough that a call is hard anyway — fix a meeting point with your driver at the car park.
