What Kochi is like on a phone

Kochi is spread across mainland, islands and a peninsula, so crossing by boat is as ordinary here as catching a bus. Fort Kochi is the walkable old quarter; Ernakulam on the mainland is the working city and busier with it. Many people use the place as a starting point before heading south to the backwaters or up into the hills at Munnar. Both sides hold a steady line, though out in the middle of the channel it thins enough to notice.

Cochin International (COK) sits at Nedumbassery, about forty-five minutes north of the city, with direct services from several Gulf cities. Taxis and airport buses handle the run in. Turn the line on before leaving the hall, because if your stay is in Fort Kochi you may need to decide between driving the long way round and finishing by boat. Others arrive by train at Ernakulam Junction or Ernakulam Town — two different stations that are easily confused, so check which one the ticket says.

Both Fort Kochi and Ernakulam are consistent, including the Marine Drive waterfront where people walk in the evening. The change comes on the ferries and the water-metro boats: mid-channel the line thins for a minute or two, then returns as you approach the jetty. In Mattancherry's thick-walled old buildings, deep interiors slow down. Heading south out of the city into the canal and paddy country, coverage follows the villages rather than the road.

What a day here costs in data

A normal day here runs about 1GB or less, since journeys are short and the boats keep to a timetable. Searching for restaurants and booking a backwater trip as you go pushes it to roughly 1–2GB. Filming an evening Kathakali performance and uploading it straight away adds more. For a night on a houseboat, download whatever you plan to watch beforehand — out on the canals the line is unreliable through the night.

• Fort Kochi — The waterfront old quarter with the Chinese fishing nets and shaded streets; walkable throughout with a good line, though many guesthouses sit in old houses whose pins land a lane away.
• Mattancherry — Spice warehouses and antique shops down tight lanes; thick walls slow things deep inside a shop, and it is worth checking the closing times of the synagogue and the palace before walking over.
• Marine Drive, Ernakulam — The mainland promenade with several jetties close together; confirm which one your route leaves from, since different services use different piers.
• Kakkanad & Infopark — The eastern office-and-hotel district where business visitors stay, about forty minutes from the old quarter at peak hour — leave margin for a morning appointment.

Day trips out of the city

• The Alleppey backwaters — An hour and a half south; the jetty is normal, but once the boat turns into the narrow tree-lined canals the line disappears in stretches — message home before you cast off.
• Munnar and the tea hills — Four or five hours up a winding road; Munnar town itself works, but the climb through the valleys and the ridge viewpoints cut out for long stretches, so download the whole route first.
• Athirappilly Falls — Two hours north-east through rubber plantations and forest; the last stretch thins, and the falls are loud enough that a call is hard anyway — fix a meeting point with your driver at the car park.
