What Jaipur is like on a phone

Jaipur is the first Rajasthan stop for most people and usually the start of a line that continues to Jodhpur or Udaipur. The old city is laid out on a generous grid, easier to read than most Indian old towns, but the three forts sit on separate ridges, so the day becomes a series of rides up and back down. In town the signal is consistent; out along the fort walls, where the stone runs off toward the valley, it starts to come and go.

Jaipur International (JAI) at Sanganer works mainly out of Terminal 2 and sits about half an hour from the old city. Plenty of people arrive instead by train at Jaipur Junction, or by coach near the Sindhi Camp bus stand. Switch the line on before you leave the hall or step down from the carriage: auto drivers will be quoting at you within seconds, and ordering in an app spares you the negotiation. The road in holds signal, so you can message the hotel from the back seat.

Inside the walled city, from Hawa Mahal to Jantar Mantar, the line is good and steady, as it is in the newer blocks around C-Scheme and Tonk Road. What changes is the switchback climb to Nahargarh and Jaigarh, which weakens on the bends shielded by rock. Amber Fort is fine at the base, though the thick-walled inner chambers cut out. The highways west toward the desert stay connected, since they are the state's main arteries.

What a day here costs in data

A full fort day runs about 1–2GB with the map open, cars ordered and short clips or descriptions read at each stop. If you shoot heavily at Amber and upload the set in the evening, budget around 2–3GB. Camera translation of signs and menus in Johari Bazaar costs little each time but stacks up quickly. Save work calls for the hotel: on the hill roads a call can drop mid-sentence.

Districts travellers ask about

• The Pink City walls — The wide grid keeps the map honest, but shops sit on upper floors behind overlapping signs, so reading door numbers beats following the pin.
• C-Scheme — The newer quarter of cafés, restaurants and offices; shaded streets and a steady line, good for an afternoon of work before an evening fort visit.
• Amber & Jal Mahal — Twenty minutes north of town, where the car park and the fort entrance are not the same place — save your pickup point the moment you step out.
• Bani Park — Guesthouses and homestays near the railway station; the internal lanes look alike and drivers get lost, so send a landmark with the pin rather than the pin alone.

Day trips out of the city

• Ajmer and Pushkar — Two and a half hours on a well-covered highway. Around the lake in Pushkar things work normally, but during the camel fair the crowd loads the network and uploads slow down noticeably.
• Ranthambore National Park — About three and a half hours south-east. Sawai Madhopur town behaves normally, but inside the reserve during a safari there is essentially nothing — note your slot time and meeting point before you go in.
• Abhaneri step well — An hour and a half out, on the way toward Agra; the turn-off runs down village roads where the line thins for the last ten minutes, so download the route offline first.
