Regional plan or country plans in Asia

Asia is where the choice between a regional and a country plan matters most, because the regional lists our supplier sells are small and they do not overlap neatly. When we checked on 10 October 2026, the Southeast Asia list covered Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam, but not Singapore. Another Asia list covered seven Länder, darunter Singapore. Some larger Asia lists include mainland China and others leave it out but add Taiwan.

The practical rule: if most of the trip is in one country, its own plan is usually the better buy, and a small second plan covers a short side trip. A regional plan earns its place when you cross two or more borders and every country on your route is on its list. For the common Thai pairings, Japan with Korea, or China with Hong Kong and Macau, there are dedicated combined plans that avoid paying for countries you will not visit.

Entry basics for Thai passport holders in Asia

Entry rules below are for Thai ordinary passports. They are summaries of the official pages linked in each line; rules change without much notice, so confirm on the official site before you pay for flights.

• Japan: Thai ordinary passports are visa-exempt for short stays of up to 15 days; a longer trip needs a visa from the Embassy of Japan. Immigration rules: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/index.html
• South Korea: short visits are visa-free, but Thai passport holders must hold an approved K-ETA before boarding unless an exemption is announced. Apply only on the official site: https://www.k-eta.go.kr
• China: Thailand and China have exempted each other's ordinary passport holders from visas since March 2024, for stays of up to 30 days per entry. Confirm the current terms with the Chinese embassy in Bangkok: https://th.china-embassy.gov.cn
• Taiwan: Thai passport holders are visa-exempt for up to 14 days under a trial that Taiwan's consular bureau lists as effective until 31 July 2027, and must be able to show a hotel booking, a contact in Taiwan and enough travel funds. https://www.boca.gov.tw/cp-149-4486-7785a-2.html

• ASEAN neighbours such as Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore admit Thai passport holders visa-free for short tourist stays; the permitted length differs by country, so check before a long trip, for example https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore/visa_requirements or https://evisa.gov.vn.

Gotchas to know before a trip to Asia

• Mainland China restricts many foreign apps and sites, including Google services and several messaging apps. Whether they work on a travel eSIM depends on how that plan routes data; read the note on the China plan page and set up any apps you need before you fly.
• Korea's K-ETA is a separate online approval from the eSIM and the flight. Apply only on the official K-ETA site; look-alike sites charge extra fees.
• Taiwan's visa exemption for Thais is a trial with an end date. If your trip falls near 31 July 2027, check Taiwan's consular bureau again before booking.
• Data-only eSIMs do not include a local phone number. Many Asian payment and ride apps send SMS codes, so keep your Thai SIM active for OTPs and use the eSIM for data.
• Monsoon seasons differ inside the region: when the Andaman coast is wet, the Gulf of Thailand or Bali may be dry. Check the national weather service for each stop, not one forecast for the whole trip.
