Most visitors end up using far less data than they are used to: short messages, email and checking flights, mostly over accommodation Wi-Fi in South Tarawa when it is working. The main gateway is Bonriki International (TRW) on Tarawa, with flights from Nadi, from Brisbane via Nauru, and other regional services on set days. A separate gateway is Cassidy International (CXI) on Kiritimati, which connects to Honolulu and Nadi rather than reliably to Tarawa. Outer islands are reached on Air Kiribati domestic flights and on cargo and passenger ships leaving the wharf at Betio.

Anything workable is concentrated in South Tarawa, along the strip from Betio through Bairiki to Bikenibeu, plus the main settlements of London and Banana on Kiritimati. Outer atolls such as Abaiang, Butaritari, Abemama and Tabiteuea, and the almost entirely uninhabited Phoenix Islands, should be treated as having no connection at all, and the same is true for the days a ship spends in open water between them.
