What Perth is like on a phone

Perth sits so far from the rest of Australia that visiting it feels like a separate trip rather than a leg of one. People come deliberately: to see family working here, for the wildflower season, or because the flight from Asia happens to be the most direct one there is. In town the network behaves like any well-served city, and the centre is more compact than most people expect, so a day covers a lot of it. Drive north or south for a while, though, and the land flattens into long straight roads and low scrub — and that is where the difference begins to show.

When you land

Perth Airport (PER) is split in two: T1 and T2 sit on one side of the airfield and T3 and T4 on the other, and they are not within walking distance of one another — moving between them means a shuttle or one stop on the airport rail line. Read the terminal letter on your ticket carefully, and switch the eSIM on as you land so you can check as you go. Most international arrivals come into the T1 side, which has its own station running straight into the centre. If you are using a ride app, the pickup bays are separate from the taxi rank and marked by zone, so match the letter in the app before you walk out. The run into the city keeps service the whole way, by road or by rail.

Where coverage changes

Through the centre, Northbridge, along the western beaches and down to Fremantle, the line is continuous in the way any coastal city is. The ferry across to Rottnest holds up for most of the crossing because it is not a long one, and on the island itself the settlement and the main jetty area are fine, while the western end and the smaller bays thin out enough that you should not build a plan on them. Head out of town on the highways north or south and you meet real gaps between the small towns — not slow service, none at all. Load the full route offline and fill the tank before leaving the last town, every time.

What a day here costs in data

A city day — walking the Swan riverfront, taking the train or a boat down to Fremantle, sending photos home — usually comes to around 1–1.5GB. Cycling around the island or driving out of town runs higher, because the map works all day and people film more than they intended to. The thing that sets Perth apart from the eastern cities is the clock: it runs several hours behind Sydney and lands much closer to Southeast Asian time, so calling home is easier to arrange than anywhere else in the country. Scheduling anything with the east coast is the part that needs the care instead.

• The CBD and Elizabeth Quay — The centre is walkable end to end and opens onto the river, so the line is steady. The exception is the underground station levels, where it weakens once you are down on the platform.
• Northbridge — Multicultural restaurant streets and late bars, an easy place to find a dinner that tastes like home. Inside a busy room a menu can be slow to load, so book the ride back from the footpath before you sit down.
• Fremantle — The old port town, reached by a direct train, with good service through the market halls and the heritage streets. If you are catching the Rottnest boat from here, open your booking before you walk into the terminal rather than in the boarding line.
• Cottesloe and Scarborough — Indian Ocean beaches where the sunset is the event. Open sky means the line works well, but at that exact hour everybody uploads at once and a long clip will crawl compared with the same clip an hour later.

Day trips out of the city

• Rottnest Island — The jetty and settlement end is usable, but ride out to the western bays and it thins right down. Save the island map and the time of your return boat to the phone before you board, because missing it is the one mistake that matters here.
• Margaret River and the drive south — The small towns along the way are fine; the roads between them and the turn-offs to the caves and tall-timber forest go quiet for long stretches. Book accommodation and save the address in advance rather than planning to find somewhere as you drive.
• The Pinnacles and the road north — Treat this one as an offline drive from the start, with service returning only in the small towns and at the larger roadhouses. Load the whole route, tell someone when you expect to arrive, and never let the fuel run low across a stretch with nothing on it.
