How much data you actually need

Most visitors use around 800MB–1.5GB a day, since maps run during the long drives between towns and WhatsApp stays open all day. If you also hail cars through an app and upload clips every evening, budget closer to 2GB a day.

When you land

Punta Cana (PUJ) takes the most tourist traffic, followed by Las Américas in Santo Domingo (SDQ), Cibao at Santiago (STI), Gregorio Luperón at Puerto Plata (POP), El Catey in Samaná (AZS) and La Romana (LRM). The country shares the island with Haiti, so there are land crossings at Dajabón, Jimaní, Elías Piña and Pedernales. Fill in the E-Ticket before you reach the immigration desk.

Where coverage changes

Signal is dense in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana, Bávaro, Puerto Plata and along the coastal highways. It thins in the Cordillera Central around Pico Duarte, on the switchback road up to Constanza, inside Los Haitises National Park and in the southwestern corner near Pedernales and Bahía de las Águilas. Boat tours out to Saona Island are usually out of range for most of the day.

  • Santo Domingo — Capital and colonial quarter; solid coverage and ride-hailing apps.
  • Punta Cana — Long resort strip; signal is fine though hotel Wi-Fi slows at night.
  • Santiago — Big inland city and the transfer point for Jarabacoa.

  • Las Terrenas — Beach village in Samaná; signal comes and goes on the access roads.

When do I fill in the E-Ticket, and do I need data for it?+

You can complete it online before you travel, and doing it at home is best because the system issues a QR code for officials to scan. Save that QR as an image on the phone so you are not depending on signal while queuing, and remember it has to be filed again for the departure leg — plenty of people forget and end up filling it in at the airport.

Do I still need data at an all-inclusive resort?+

Usually yes. In-room Wi-Fi handles messages, but it slows noticeably in the evening when everyone is on it, and the moment you leave for an excursion, a dive or a drive to another town you are outside that network all day. Nearly every transfer driver confirms the pickup time by WhatsApp on the day itself, which is exactly the message you would miss.

Can I use ride-hailing apps everywhere in the country?+

Not everywhere. Ride-hailing works well in Santo Domingo and Santiago, but in resort areas like Punta Cana and along the north coast most journeys still run on hotel taxis or transfers booked in advance. Agree the fare before you get in, and keep the WhatsApp number of any driver you liked so you can call the same one again.

What should I prepare for the mountains around Constanza or Pico Duarte?+

Download the whole route offline before leaving Santiago or La Vega, because the mountain roads twist and signal disappears for long stretches. The Pico Duarte climb has to be done with a registered guide over several days, so treat it as fully offline and tell your accommodation or family in advance which day you expect to be reachable again.

When does a Dominican Republic eSIM start counting days?+

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
