快速解答

  • The core set is MTR Mobile, Citymapper or HKeMobility for getting around, Google Maps, My Observatory for weather, Octopus and OpenRice.
  • Most of these apps need internet for live information on the move; Google Maps offline areas help, but carry an eSIM or Wi-Fi access too.
  • Install and set up every app at home on Wi-Fi before the flight, download maps and sign in, so you do not lose time at the airport.

How to think about your app list

Hong Kong has dense public transport and most information lives on the phone, from train times to storm warnings to restaurant reviews. Too many apps cause confusion and use storage, so pick one or two per category that you will really use, and avoid unfamiliar apps of unknown origin.

Install transport apps only from the official App Store or Google Play listing, and check the developer name before every install.

Transport and maps

  • MTR Mobile: the MTR's own app for routes, stations and service information, handy for planning rides on the rail network.
  • Citymapper: multi-mode journey planning across rail, bus and ferry, useful when you need several connections.
  • HKeMobility: the government transport app, bringing together travel information across several modes.
  • Google Maps: search places, read reviews and walk with turn-by-turn guidance. Download Hong Kong as an offline area before flying.

For offline map downloads and their limits, see “Offline maps that actually work when the data runs out”; for how much data Google Maps uses, see “How much data does Google Maps actually use?”.

Weather, typhoons and taxis

My Observatory is the Hong Kong Observatory's app for forecasts, heavy rain and typhoon signals. Typhoon season runs roughly May to November, and at signal No. 8 or higher most transport and attractions close, so open it each morning before leaving the hotel.

Typhoon signals and Black Rainstorm warnings affect flights and openings. Always check with the Hong Kong Observatory and each attraction's official channel (last checked October 2026).

For taxis, Uber and HKTaxi are the usual choices. Availability, fares and payment options vary, so check inside the app before ordering. They help at night, in rain or with big luggage.

Payments, food and theme parks

  • Octopus app: tied to the Octopus card used on the MTR, buses, trams, Star Ferry and convenience stores. See the official site for tourist card options.
  • OpenRice: the main local app for finding and reviewing restaurants, and some places take bookings in the app.
  • Hong Kong Disneyland app: shows ride waiting times and Standby Passes, as provided by the official app.
  • Booking apps of the Klook kind: used to buy attraction tickets and tours ahead. Check cancellation terms and ticket validity before paying.

Prices, hours and ticket terms change, so check the official app or website of each place before buying. For more on transit cards, read “Transit Cards: Suica, T-money, Octopus and EasyCard”.

Google TranslateTranslation, including CantoneseSome languages can be downloaded for offline use

Keep the home screen for what you use daily, such as maps, a rail app and My Observatory. Put the rest in a folder called Hong Kong so you can find them quickly when standing in a crowded station, and stop apps from updating themselves over mobile data.

When travelling as a family, agree who holds the maps and the taxi app, and share locations over chat if you split up. A power bank matters more than expected, because map apps and cameras drain the battery quickly.

Wi-Fi.HK and translation

Wi-Fi.HK is the government-led brand for free public Wi-Fi. Network names start with Wi-Fi.HK, no registration is needed, and some venues limit the time. You find it at the airport, tourist sites, malls, parks, museums and ferry terminals, and its app or website lists hotspots.

Google Translate supports Cantonese and can read menu or sign photos or typed text, but results may miss the context, especially dish names, so pair it with photos and the restaurant's own descriptions. Its data use is covered in “How much data does Google Translate use, and should you download languages first?”.

Public Wi-Fi is an open network: stick to HTTPS sites and avoid banking. If you rely on connectivity often, make an eSIM your main link and use free Wi-Fi as a backup.

出發前先設定好

  1. 1Install on home Wi-FiDownload every app and sign in first. Some verification codes go by SMS to your Thai SIM.

  3. 3Install the eSIMInstall the eSIM over Wi-Fi before flying and turn roaming on for that line after landing.
  4. 4Turn on alertsEnable notifications for My Observatory and your booking apps so you do not miss warnings or changes.

常見問題

常見問題

Do I need every app?+

No. Start with Google Maps, one transport app, My Observatory and OpenRice, then add more for specific activities.

Do these apps work without internet?+

Mostly live data needs internet; only some parts, such as downloaded offline maps, work without it.

When should I set them up?+

At home over Wi-Fi before the flight, so downloads do not eat roaming data.
