Buying, installing and starting the validity clock are three separate steps, and each brand sets its own rules. This guide compares the windows brands publish and gives a simple order of steps before you fly.

How far ahead can you buy an eSIM? When to install it and when to switch it on

快速解答

  • You can usually buy weeks or even months ahead, since the brands we checked set their limits between 60 days and 6 months from purchase or from scanning the QR code.
  • Install at home on Wi-Fi about 1 to 3 days before you fly, then leave it switched off until you land.
  • Do not delete the eSIM profile before the trip is over, because most QR codes cannot be installed a second time.

Buying, installing and activating are different things

Buying means paying and receiving a QR code or activation code. Installing means adding the eSIM profile to your phone. Activation is the moment the eSIM starts using data, and it is usually where the validity clock begins to run.

The three steps do not have to happen together. You can install at home without starting the clock, as long as the plan counts days from the first connection at your destination. That is why the start rule on the plan page matters before you pay.

The two common rules for starting the clock

  • Clock starts on install: days begin as soon as the profile is added, so installing too early wastes days.
  • Clock starts on first connection at the destination: you can install early, and the days begin when the phone joins a supported network in the covered area.

Airalo says most plans start when the eSIM connects to a supported network in the coverage area, while some start at installation, so check the policy shown for each package. Holafly says its plans start when roaming data is activated at the destination, and on iOS 16.4 and later the install and activation steps may be combined.

AiraloMostly on connection at destination, some on installNo install deadline stated, install early; networks may recycle unused eSIMs, often 90 days from purchase
HolaflyWhen roaming data is activated at destinationNo activation deadline stated; full refund within 6 months if not activated
NomadOn connection at destination, or auto-activates on day 60, whichever is first60 days from purchase
UbigiOn arrival in a covered area, or immediately if already therePreloaded plan or QR must be activated within 6 months of purchase
AIS SIM2FlyFrom first data connection abroadAfter opening, use abroad within 60 days or the bundled pack is lost
True GO Travel MyPlan24-hour cycles from first connection abroadUse abroad within 60 days of scanning the QR

Saily lists 180 days before a plan activates automatically, but we could only read that in a search snippet because its site blocks bots, so confirm it on the plan page before you buy. Klook resells eSIMs from several suppliers, so the rules differ by product, and some QR codes are listed as valid for 60 days.

These windows and conditions can change. Last checked October 2026; confirm on the brand's official page before you buy.

Unused eSIMs can be recycled

Airalo explains that some networks reuse eSIMs that were never installed, often after about 90 days from purchase, and Airalo has no control over it. A QR code left sitting for months may stop working. An eSIM that is installed and switched off is safer than a QR code kept unscanned.

A timeline for the days before you fly

  1. 1Buy: 1 to 3 weeks before the flightThis leaves time to compare plans and check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to one carrier. Buying months ahead adds no benefit and runs into the brand's window.
  2. 2Install: 1 to 3 days before, at home on Wi-FiInstall on stable Wi-Fi while there is still time to contact support if the scan fails. Label the profile so it is easy to tell apart from your Thai SIM.
  3. 3Set it up, then switch it offTurn the eSIM's data line off, and keep your Thai SIM on for bank OTP messages.
  4. 4Switch on: when you landTurn the eSIM line on, and enable data roaming if the brand requires it. Wait for a network name to appear, then start using it.

If you are unsure how a plan counts days, ask support before buying: does the clock start on install or on first connection at the destination, and does an installed but switched-off eSIM lose any days? A written answer helps if a dispute comes up later.

Brands count their deadlines from different points: some from the purchase date, others from the day you scan the QR. Put the purchase date and the install date in the same calendar as your flight.

不該做的事

  • Do not delete the eSIM profile before you finish using it. Most QR codes cannot be installed twice, and you may have to buy again.
  • Do not leave the eSIM data line on at home if the plan counts from first connection, as the phone may join a network and start the clock.
  • Do not leave installation until you reach the destination airport, where Wi-Fi may be weak. The guide on buying before the flight or at the airport covers the trade-offs.

常見問題

Can I buy an eSIM a month before the trip?+

Yes with the brands we checked, but install a few days before you fly and watch the brand's window, for example 60 days for Nomad and 6 months for Ubigi.

Will installing at home use up my days?+

It depends on the plan. If it counts from connection at the destination, you lose no days. If it counts from install, the clock starts at once.

What if I already deleted the eSIM profile?+

Contact the brand's support and ask whether a new QR can be issued. Answers differ by brand, and you may have to buy a new plan.

If the trip is cancelled, can I get a refund?+

Mostly only if the eSIM is not installed or activated, for example within 6 months at Holafly and 30 days at Nomad. Read the brand's policy before buying.
