South Sudan eSIM
South Sudan has no traveller eSIM service, and we do not list a plan for it. Almost everyone who goes is there for work — aid agency staff, journalists, people in oil or logistics — travelling inside an organisation's system on a local line arranged for them. The other thing that shapes any plan is the long rainy season, which turns many roads to mud and pushes movement between states onto internal flights for months at a time. What follows is travel context, not advice on buying a plan you cannot buy here.

What you use depends on the line your organisation provides. In practice it is light — messages, email and the occasional report upload — because outside Juba there is rarely anything steady enough to lean on.

The main gateway is Juba International (JUB), served mostly from Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Entebbe, Cairo and Dubai, with domestic airports at Malakal (MAK) and Wau (WUU). The overland route people use most is the Nimule crossing on the road up from Uganda. Movement to remoter areas usually happens on humanitarian air services rather than by vehicle, especially once the rains have started.

Service clusters in Juba and in state capitals such as Wau, Malakal, Bor and Yei. The wide country in between has very little: the Sudd wetlands cover an enormous area in the centre, Boma and Badingilo in the east carry the wildlife migration routes, and the long inter-state roads become impassable in the wet season. Field work there runs on the organisation's own radios and satellite equipment rather than on a phone network.

How much does the rainy season affect travel in South Sudan?+
A great deal. Many dirt roads are unusable for months, so movement between states shifts to light aircraft or river boats. Field programmes are normally planned in two versions from the outset, one for the dry season and one for the wet. Ask your local organiser before locking in tickets, and leave spare days, because internal flights shift easily with the weather and with how many passengers turn up.
Are there rules about taking photographs in South Sudan?+
Be very careful. Photographing in public — particularly near bridges, government buildings, airports and checkpoints — can draw questions from officials, and a photography permit is required in some circumstances. Ask your local contact or organiser before you raise a camera or a phone, and never photograph people without asking first, because it is sensitive both legally and for your own safety.
