What you use depends on the line your organisation provides. In practice it is light — messages, email and the occasional report upload — because outside Juba there is rarely anything steady enough to lean on.

The main gateway is Juba International (JUB), served mostly from Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Entebbe, Cairo and Dubai, with domestic airports at Malakal (MAK) and Wau (WUU). The overland route people use most is the Nimule crossing on the road up from Uganda. Movement to remoter areas usually happens on humanitarian air services rather than by vehicle, especially once the rains have started.

Service clusters in Juba and in state capitals such as Wau, Malakal, Bor and Yei. The wide country in between has very little: the Sudd wetlands cover an enormous area in the centre, Boma and Badingilo in the east carry the wildlife migration routes, and the long inter-state roads become impassable in the wet season. Field work there runs on the organisation's own radios and satellite equipment rather than on a phone network.

• Juba — Capital on the White Nile and the hub for flights and aid agencies.
• Wau — Main north-western town at the end of the old railway line.
• Malakal — White Nile river town in the north, reached by boat or air.
• Yei — Southern town near the border; the road from Juba varies by season.
• Nimule — Ugandan border crossing and the riverside park of the same name.
