What you use depends on the line your organisation provides. In practice it is light — messages, email and the occasional report upload — because outside Juba there is rarely anything steady enough to lean on.

The main gateway is Juba International (JUB), served mostly from Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Entebbe, Cairo and Dubai, with domestic airports at Malakal (MAK) and Wau (WUU). The overland route people use most is the Nimule crossing on the road up from Uganda. Movement to remoter areas usually happens on humanitarian air services rather than by vehicle, especially once the rains have started.

The wide country in between has very little: the Sudd wetlands cover an enormous area in the centre, Boma and Badingilo in the east carry the wildlife migration routes, and the long inter-state roads become impassable in the wet season. Field work there runs on the organisation's own radios and satellite equipment rather than on a phone network.
