How to evaluate any eSIM seller

Every travel eSIM seller's homepage looks confident. What actually tells sellers apart is not the marketing copy but six things you can check in about five minutes on any seller's site, before you hand over a card number. None of these require you to trust a review site or a ranking — you read them straight off the seller's own pages, the same way we read the sellers in the table above. Run through them once for the seller you already use and once for any seller you are considering switching to, and the comparison stops being a guess.

• Support responsiveness before you buy, not after. Message the stated support channel with a real question about your destination and time how long the reply takes. A seller that answers slowly on a sales enquiry usually answers slower once you are stuck at an airport with no data.
• Refund policy clarity. A policy you can read in one pass and repeat back to a friend is worth more than one that needs cross-referencing three pages. If two sections of the same policy seem to contradict each other, as can happen, that ambiguity is a cost you carry, not the seller.
• Network partner transparency. Does the seller state which local network your data will actually run on at the destination, or only the country name? A named network lets you check its coverage map for the region you are visiting; a country name on its own does not.
• Install and activation friction. Is the eSIM delivered as a QR code you scan once, or does it need an app, an account, and a manual APN configuration? Every extra step is a place where installation can fail on unfamiliar hardware, usually the last thing you want to be dealing with the night before a flight.
• Top-up flexibility. If you might use more data than the plan holds, check now whether the same profile can be topped up, or whether running out means starting over with a brand-new eSIM and, on some phones, a limited slot count.
• Validity and expiry rules. A validity window can start on purchase, on first activation, or on first data use, and each seller can define it differently. Confirm which of the three applies before you buy a plan for a trip that has not started yet.
• Total price transparency at checkout, including any card, currency-conversion, or processing fee, not just the headline plan price. Add it up before you compare, since the number on the pricing page and the number you are actually charged are not always the same.

Red flags to check before buying from any seller

None of the following automatically means a seller is dishonest — sellers make mistakes, translate pages imperfectly, or simply have not updated something in a while. But each one is worth a closer look before you pay, because it tells you where to read more carefully.

• No published refund or cancellation terms at all, only a general "contact us" line. A seller confident in its terms usually publishes them somewhere you can find without asking.
• A support channel that is only a contact form with no stated response time. That can be perfectly fine for a question that can wait a day, but it tells you not to rely on that channel if your data fails mid-trip.
• Marketing language that promises unlimited everything with no mention of a fair-use limit anywhere in the terms. Somewhere in the small print, almost every unlimited plan on the market has a daily threshold; if you cannot find it at all, that is itself worth asking about before buying.
• Prices or country coverage that differ between the page you land on and the checkout page. It happens by accident more often than by design, but you should notice it before you pay, not after.
• Reviews that are uniformly five stars with near-identical wording, or a review section with no dates on any of the entries. Genuine feedback about roaming data tends to be mixed and specific, because networks vary by region and phone.
• No stated company name, registration, or physical presence anywhere on the site. A seller that will not say who it is makes "who do I contact if this goes wrong" a much harder question to answer.

What all of these red flags have in common is that you can check every one of them yourself, in a few minutes, before you pay — you do not have to wait for a problem to find out. Spotting one does not automatically mean you should walk away; it means you should read the relevant page a little more carefully, or send a question and see how it is answered, before you decide.

Why price-per-GB alone is misleading, and what to ask before choosing a seller for a specific trip

Price per gigabyte is easy to calculate and easy to misuse. Divide a plan's price by its data allowance and you get a single number that looks like it settles the argument, but it leaves out everything that actually determines whether a plan works for your trip: the validity window it has to fit inside, whether unused data at the end is simply wasted, whether the network behind it is fast enough where you are actually going, and what happens the moment you run out. A 20GB plan at a low price per gigabyte is not a good deal if it expires before you have used a third of it, or if it runs on a network with weak coverage outside the capital.

The more useful way to price a plan is against your actual trip: how many days, how you use data day to day, and whether you are somewhere with reliable wifi to fall back on. A short business trip with hotel wifi most of the day needs very little data at all; a solo road trip with no wifi and constant navigation needs a plan sized for peak days, not average days. Price per gigabyte cannot tell you which of those you are, and a table that ranks sellers by that single number cannot either.

• How many days am I actually online, not just how many days is the trip?
• Will I have wifi at my accommodation, or is the eSIM my only connection the whole time?
• Does the validity window match my trip length, or am I paying for days I will not use?
• If I run out early, can I top up the same profile, or do I need to install a second eSIM?
• Does this seller name the network my data will run on, and does that network cover the specific area I am visiting, not just the country?
• What does this seller's refund policy actually let me do if my plans change before I fly?
