What is APN?

APN is a term most people never need to learn in a lifetime of using mobile phones — right up until the day they finish installing an eSIM and everything looks correct. The network name appears in the corner of the screen, the signal bars are full, the letters 5G or LTE are showing, and yet the browser spins and never loads a page. That situation is common enough that almost every provider prints an APN value somewhere in the order confirmation, and it is the reason the term turns up on nearly every troubleshooting page you will read.
This page explains what an APN is in language that does not require an engineering background, why you usually never have to touch it, which symptoms genuinely point at it, which symptoms do not, and the order in which to check things before you start editing settings. One point is worth making at the very start: the correct APN value comes from the provider of your plan and from nobody else. There is no universal value that works on every network in every country, and copying one from a forum post about a different operator is how a working connection gets broken.

Think of a mobile network as something that does more than one job. It carries different kinds of traffic and hands them off to different destinations. The APN, or Access Point Name, is the name of the doorway your phone asks the network to send its data through. Once the handset has attached to a tower, the next step is to request a data channel, and that request has to name a doorway the network recognises. If the name is wrong, or empty in a case where one is required, the network simply does not open the channel. The result is the exact symptom people describe: full bars, no internet.
This is why signal strength and working data are two separate things. The bars tell you the handset is talking to a tower. Getting online requires a further step that the screen never shows you. Plenty of travellers spend twenty minutes walking around a terminal looking for a better signal when signal was never the problem — the step that failed was the request to open the data channel, not the attachment to the tower.

An eSIM profile carries more than the identity of the SIM. It usually carries network settings as well, and when the handset activates the profile those settings are applied automatically. On top of that, both major mobile operating systems ship with a large internal database of network settings that is refreshed through ordinary system updates. The cases where manual entry is still needed tend to come from three situations: an older handset or an old OS version whose settings database is out of date, a destination network that is not in that database at all, or a value someone typed in earlier that is now overriding what the profile brought with it. The third case is more common than people expect. It shows up on the phones of travellers who edited the APN to use a local SIM on a previous trip and never removed the entry afterwards.

Sintomi che indicano davvero un problema di APN
Before changing anything, work out whether what you are seeing fits the pattern. The pattern usually looks like this: the handset displays a destination network name, the bars are there, data roaming is switched on for the travel profile, that profile is selected as the line for mobile data, and yet every app that needs the internet fails at once rather than just one of them.

Knowing what is not the cause saves as much time as knowing what is. The problems most often misdiagnosed as APN faults are: data that is slow but working, which is about network load or the speed terms of the plan; video that stutters on an underground train, which is about coverage; and a single app that hangs while others are fine, which is usually about that app.
Another frequent case is a profile installed before the plan's start date, or a plan whose clock is designed to begin at first attachment to a destination network. In that situation the handset may not be authorised to pass data at all, and no amount of APN editing will change it. How and when a plan starts counting varies between plans and providers, so the answer has to come from the detail page of the plan you bought.

Da dove viene il valore corretto
The only reliable source is the documentation for the plan you actually bought: the order confirmation email, the plan's own detail page, or the installation instructions that came with the QR code. It has to come from there because the value is tied to the network that this particular plan uses in that country, which may not be the network another plan for the same country uses.
If the documentation does not mention an APN at all, that usually means the plan configures itself and there is nothing to type. In that case, entering a value yourself creates a new problem rather than solving the old one. Menu paths differ by manufacturer and by OS version, so there is no single route that works on every handset. What is consistent is that the screen lives inside the settings group for mobile networks or SIMs, and then inside the settings for the specific profile rather than at device level. If you cannot find it, use the search box in the settings app and type APN — that works on most phones regardless of the skin the manufacturer applies.
On an iPhone the mobile network screen may hide the APN fields entirely when the network does not permit editing. That is normal behaviour, not a fault. On Android there is usually an option to create a new APN entry rather than edit the existing one, and creating a new one is safer because the original stays available to fall back on. After saving, remember to select the new entry — saving it does not make it the active one.

L'APN e il tethering
Sharing your connection with another device sometimes uses a different settings entry from the one your own apps use. That produces the case where the phone itself is online but the hotspot passes no data. If that happens, the first thing to establish is whether your plan permits tethering at all, because some do not, and the rule differs by provider and by plan.
If the plan does allow it and the hotspot still fails, check whether the APN entry in use covers sharing as well. On some Android builds that is governed by the APN type field. If you are not certain what belongs there, do not guess — ask the plan's provider, because getting that field wrong can stop the whole entry from working.
Telefoni che contengono più profili contemporaneamente
A modern handset can store several eSIM profiles at once, though the number it can have active simultaneously is limited and varies by model. Where several profiles exist, each keeps its own network settings, and editing the APN under one has no effect whatsoever on another. The usual confusion is somebody entering the right value under the wrong profile and concluding that the fix does not work.

If you have worked through everything and it still fails, stop changing values. Trying one internet-sourced string after another does not raise your chance of success; it raises the chance of leaving the phone in a state that is hard to reverse. Collect the details instead and let the plan's support team look at it from the network side.
