  • Emergency numbers differ from Thailand: 112 across the EU, 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia. Confirm again before you travel.
  • Find Thai embassies and consulates on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or the embassy's own site. This page does not list embassy phone numbers because they can change.
  • Save the numbers and contact channels on the phone and on paper before you go, because at the moment of need you may have no signal or a flat battery.

Emergency numbers abroad are not the Thai ones

In Thailand most people know the emergency numbers without thinking. Abroad those numbers do not always work, and under stress it is hard to recall the local one. Knowing it before you go is a small habit that helps a great deal.

The numbers in the table are long-standing national emergency numbers for some popular destinations. It is not a complete list of every country and it does not replace official information. Always confirm with the destination's official source before you travel.

How to find the Thai embassy or consulate

The most reliable information is at the official sources: the website of the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which lists Thai embassies and consulates abroad, and each embassy's own site. We do not print embassy phone numbers here because numbers and office hours change, and a wrong number in an emergency is worse than none.

  1. 1Open the official websiteSearch the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website and pick the embassy or consulate that covers the city you will visit.
  2. 2Check the area it coversSome countries have an embassy and several consulates, each covering a different area.
  3. 3Save the channels the official source listsCopy the email or contact form and the address onto your phone and onto paper.
  4. 4Re-check before you flyWhat you saved a month ago may be out of date; check again in the week you travel.

What an embassy can and cannot do

Thai embassies and consulates help Thai nationals abroad with important matters, but not everything. Understanding the scope helps you contact the right place and avoid disappointment.

SituazioneUsually contact firstWhat the embassy may help with
Lost passportLocal police, then the embassyA new or emergency travel document
Serious accident or illnessLocal emergency number, then insurerAdvice and coordination within its remit
Arrest or legal caseAsk to contact the embassy, and ask for a lawyer or interpreter as your rights allowInformation on rights and general guidance, not legal representation
Crisis or disasterFollow local authorities, then see embassy noticesNews and advice for Thais in the area

Embassies generally do not lend money, book tickets or pay medical bills for you. Check the details of the services on the embassy's or the ministry's website.

Registering or notifying the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your trip, where such a service is offered, may help you receive important alerts. Check the ministry's website to see whether it is currently available and how it works.

How to call and what to have ready

When you call an emergency number, be ready to say three things clearly: where you are, what happened and what help you need. Operators in some countries speak English and in others they do not, so speak short, slow and clear, and have a street name or nearby landmark ready.

  • Your hotel or accommodation address in the local language, saved as a screenshot.
  • Key medical information, such as drug allergies, conditions and blood group, if you have it.
  • Your travel insurance policy number and the insurer's claims contact.
  • One or two contacts in Thailand, with names and relationships.

In many countries the international emergency number 112 can be redirected to the local number on mobile networks, but this depends on the country and network. Do not rely on one number alone when you know the correct local one.

Prepare for the moment you have no signal

An emergency is when the phone tends to fail: flat battery, no data, or lost along with the incident. Prepare in layers. Write the numbers and the embassy's email on a small piece of paper kept apart from the phone, and save them on the phone in a form you can open without internet, such as a screenshot or an offline note.

On connectivity: having mobile data at the destination from the moment you land lets you email the embassy, open a map to the police station or hospital and receive bank OTP codes at once, without hunting for Wi-Fi that needs a sign-in or has limits. A travel eSIM is one option. Keep your Thai SIM for SMS and read the plan terms before buying, because no plan can guarantee a connection everywhere.

Your before-you-go checklist

  1. Confirm the emergency numbers for your destination from an official source
  2. Find the Thai embassy or consulate covering your area and save its contact channels
  3. Save your insurance policy number and claims contact
  4. Copy your passport and store the copy apart from the original
  5. Write the above on paper and keep a screenshot too
  6. Check battery, power bank and how you will get data at the destination

For specific problems such as a lost passport, a lost phone or a skimmed card, read our dedicated guides, and remember that emergency numbers are for situations involving risk to life or safety only.

FAQ

Does 112 work everywhere in the world?+

Not everywhere. 112 is the EU emergency number, and many mobile networks redirect it to the local number, but this depends on the country and network. Also learn the local number for your destination.

Why does this page not list Thai embassy phone numbers?+

Because numbers and office hours change, and an outdated number in an emergency is dangerous. Use the channels given on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or on each embassy's own site.

Should I call the emergency number or the embassy first?+

If life or safety is at risk, always call the local emergency number first. The embassy is for documents, assistance to Thai nationals and advice, not a replacement for an ambulance.

What if I do not speak the local language?+

Speak short, slow and clear, giving your location, the type of problem and what you need. Keep the address in the local language as a screenshot and use a translation app if you have data.

What should I save on the phone before I go?+

The destination's emergency numbers, the embassy's contact channels from the official source, your policy number, key medical details and a passport copy, plus a separate paper copy.
