What CNS is like

Cairns is a mid-sized airport acting as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest to the north. The town itself is only a few minutes away by road, a clear advantage over the big city airports. What people actually come here to do, though, is get on a boat or drive north along the coast, and both take you out of coverage quickly. Planning data here is less about speed and more about knowing in advance which hours of the day will be silent.

Switch the line on at landing; the town network is solid and covers the airport fully. The international and domestic buildings sit close together, so moving between them is not a production. Biosecurity is taken particularly seriously here because this is tropical farming country, and fresh produce or seeds get real attention. If you have a dive or snorkel trip booked for the next morning, confirm the meeting point and time while you are still inside the terminal. Out on the boat you will not be able to reach anybody, and that is not the moment to discover a detail was wrong.

Terminal Wi-Fi is free and rarely congested, since flights do not arrive in great banks here. The thing that actually catches people out is not the airport network but the assumption that there will be signal on the boat. Once a vessel heads offshore towards the reef you are off the network for several hours, and onboard Wi-Fi, where it exists, is slow and shared among dozens of passengers. Treat a reef day as genuinely disconnected and finish anything that matters before you board. Nothing about the coverage in town prepares you for how complete that silence is.

The ride from the airport into town takes only a few minutes by taxi, app car or transfer, and costs almost nothing in data. What needs planning is leaving town. The coast road north towards Port Douglas and the Daintree loses service around the headlands and under dense canopy in places. If you are driving, download the whole route before you set off and tell whoever is expecting you roughly when you should arrive, because going quiet for two hours on that road is normal rather than a sign of trouble. Coming back south, the signal returns in the same places it left.
