Dublin holds several crowds at once — tech workers, language students, people in for rugby or a concert, families visiting relatives — so a weekend and a weekday feel like different cities. The centre is smaller than people expect and you can cross it on foot in half an hour, but anything suburban means the tram, the bus or the coastal rail line, with the timetable checked in an app each time. In town the line is easy to live with; what changes it is the moment the train runs out along the sea to the north or the south.

Dublin Airport has terminals one and two and still no rail or tram of its own, so everyone leaves by airport coach or taxi, thirty to forty-five minutes depending on traffic. The other ways in are the Irish Sea ferries into Dublin Port and intercity trains into Heuston or Connolly. Turn the line on while you are still on the aircraft or the ship: several coach services want the ticket bought in the app beforehand, and the desk queue is long at peak. Both sides of the Liffey in the centre work well, including on the Luas trams, which run at street level the whole way. Head south towards the Wicklow mountains and coverage thins fast in valleys ringed by high ground, where mist and rain arrive quickly enough to change a walking plan within minutes.

• Temple Bar and the south centre — The busiest pub streets after dark; the narrow cobbled lanes make positions wander and the speed you feel sag on a weekend night.
• Docklands and Grand Canal — Waterside offices, new buildings, wide streets — the easiest part of town to take a video call from a café.
• Portobello and Rathmines — Long-stay territory along the canal, quieter than the centre and twenty minutes' walk in; outdoors along the water it stays steady.
• Stoneybatter and Smithfield — North of the river: low terraces and a big open square, well served by the tram, with the usual pattern of back rooms in old brick houses being weaker than front ones.

• Howth — Half an hour on the DART to a fishing village on a headland; the cliff path is exposed and mostly connected, though the stretches that drop below the cliff line cut out briefly.
• Glendalough in the Wicklow mountains — A valley hemmed in by high ground with long stretches of nothing; download offline trail maps before you leave Dublin, and remember that an emergency call does not work the way a data session does — rely only on the park's and the official services' own guidance.
• Belfast — About two hours by train, but it is a crossing into another jurisdiction, so check the covered-destination list on the product page before you go rather than assuming. The rural stretches on the way dip intermittently, as rail journeys do anywhere.
