Prince Said Ibrahim International (HAH), north of Moroni on Grande Comore, is the main gateway, with domestic flights into Ouani on Anjouan (AJN) and Mohéli (NWA). By sea, Mutsamudu on Anjouan is the principal port, and passenger boats run between Moroni, Mutsamudu and Fomboni depending on conditions. Switch the line on when you land, since guesthouses usually collect guests themselves and will want to call you.

Moroni, Mutsamudu, Fomboni and most coastal villages work normally. It thins noticeably on the climb up Mount Karthala, across the interior plateau of Anjouan, in the forest and around the southern islets of Mohéli near Nioumachoua, and during boat crossings, which can lose service the whole way. Download the island maps in advance, because signposting is close to non-existent.

Book ahead if you can, but always reconfirm on the day. Domestic hops use small aircraft and shift their times often, and the inter-island boats depend mostly on the sea state. What works is collecting a WhatsApp number for the airline or boat operator on your first day and checking status each morning before you set out. Always leave a spare day before your international flight home.
What language is spoken in the Comoros?+
Everyday conversation happens in Comorian, which is close to Swahili, while French and Arabic are also official. In practice French will get you through with guesthouses, shops and officials almost everywhere. You will meet some English at places used to foreign guests, but do not count on it, so download the offline French pack before you head out of town.
Should I carry cash or can I pay by card?+
Plan around cash. Shops, markets, boatmen and small guesthouses deal in Comorian francs, card payment exists only at a handful of larger hotels in Moroni, and ATMs are limited and do not accept every foreign card. Change money while you are still in Moroni, before you cross to Anjouan or Mohéli, where your options narrow considerably.
