North Korea is not a destination you travel independently. The main way in is Pyongyang Sunan International (FNJ), served principally by Air Koryo, and the other is the cross-border train from Dandong in China into Sinuiju and on to Pyongyang. Both are arranged through an authorised tour operator rather than by buying your own ticket and turning up at the border. The operator is the one who tells you the current conditions on documents, what may be brought in, and what happens at the customs check.

The domestic network is an internal system separate from the wider internet, and it is not open to visitors' handsets in the way roaming works elsewhere. The places tour groups typically visit — Pyongyang, Kaesong, Wonsan, and the northern route towards Mount Paektu — all sit outside anything a foreign SIM will attach to. Assume no service for the entire trip and prepare everything offline from the start rather than expecting to fill gaps as you go.

Can I buy an eSIM for North Korea?+
No. We do not have inventory for North Korea, and the network there does not accept foreign SIMs in the ordinary way regardless. Buying an Asia regional plan does not change that. Prepare the trip as fully offline, and ask your tour operator how emergency contact with people at home is handled while you are inside the country, because that channel runs through them rather than through your phone.
Can I bring my phone into the country?+
Visitors have generally been able to bring a phone in and take photographs where permitted, but what you carry may be inspected at the border and there are rules about what may and may not be photographed. Your operator and your guides brief the group on this before the trip starts. Follow that briefing closely, and when you are not sure whether a particular subject is allowed, ask before you raise the camera rather than after.
Can I reach people at home while I am there?+
Plan as though you cannot. The usual approach is to tell people at home in advance exactly how many days you will be silent, leave them the tour operator's phone number and email as the emergency channel, and close out work and banking tasks before departure — particularly anything that depends on a one-time password sent to your mobile number, which you will not receive while you are inside the country.
Where do I start with booking a trip there?+
Start with the travel advice issued by the government of the country whose passport you hold, because some states place warnings or restrictions on their own citizens for this destination. Then approach an authorised tour operator, who arranges the visa, the route in and the rules that apply while you are there. Whether tourism is open at all shifts from period to period, so confirm the current position before you put down a deposit.
