China business trip connectivity for buyers: data, apps and a test routine

What a buyer actually needs online on a China trip, which tasks depend on which tool, and a short test routine to run in Thailand before you fly.

  • List what you must do online each day, such as maps, supplier chat, email, file transfer and video calls, then choose the connection to fit that list rather than the other way round.
  • Many foreign apps are blocked on local networks in China. Some roaming eSIM plans route data abroad so these apps often open, but it depends on the plan and nobody can guarantee it.
  • Test at home: install, switch on, open every app you depend on, and save offline maps, files and a back-up way to reach your team before you leave Thailand.

Start with the tasks, not the SIM

A buyer on a China trip uses the phone differently from a tourist. The phone is a meeting tool, a map, a translator, a payment device and a link to the office at home. Before choosing a data option, write the list of tasks that must work, and mark which are essential (the day goes wrong without them) and which are nice to have.

Why many apps may not open in China

On local mobile networks in China, a number of foreign services are blocked or very slow. This commonly affects well-known search, messaging, social media, email and cloud storage services from outside China. The list changes, so do not trust an old table or a friend's memory of last year.

Some roaming eSIM plans carry your traffic through a network outside China, so those apps often open. Others use the local network directly, and the blocks apply. You usually cannot tell which from a plan's title alone, so read the provider's description and, again, test before you fly. For a deeper explanation of options, see our guides on eSIM for China without a VPN and on internet apps and connection options in China.

Rules about circumvention tools and about what you may access change. Ask your employer and the relevant official sources before relying on any VPN, and do not assume a tool that worked on someone else's trip will work on yours.

Choosing a connection for the trip

There is no single right answer. Compare the options against your task list and your tolerance for setup effort. Our general guides on business travel connectivity and on eSIM versus roaming cover the wider comparison; this table keeps to what matters for a buyer.

How much data does a buyer need?

Usage depends on how you work. Maps and chat use little. Video calls, cloud sync of large drawings and photos of samples use far more. Rather than guess, estimate from your own habits: check how much your phone used in a typical working week at home, then add the video calls and file transfers you expect. Our data calculator and video call data calculator can help turn that into a rough number.

  • Photos of samples and factory floors add up quickly; back them up over hotel Wi-Fi where sign-in or limits allow, rather than over mobile data.
  • Turn off automatic video upload and large app updates while travelling.
  • Share a hotspot to a laptop only when you need it, and check whether your plan allows tethering.
  • Pick a plan with a size and validity that fit the trip length, and check whether you can top up if you run short.

A test routine to run in Thailand

The cheapest time to find a problem is before you fly. Use this order and write down anything that fails.

  1. 1Verifique o celularConfirm that the phone supports eSIM and is not locked to one network. Our device checker can help, and your operator can confirm the lock status.
  2. 2Install before departureInstall the eSIM profile on reliable Wi-Fi, keep it switched off for data until you land, and keep the instructions available offline.
  3. 3Install the apps you needInstall the local chat, map and translation apps you plan to use, and sign in while you still have your Thai SIM for verification codes.
  4. 4Save offline materialDownload offline maps for each city, languages for translation, and your key documents, tickets and spec sheets.
  5. 5Test on arrivalWhen you land, switch on data and open every essential app once. If something does not open, note which one, then follow the provider's help before trying other fixes.
Keep your Thai SIM in the phone and switched on for SMS and bank codes, even if you use a separate data eSIM. A second phone or a small Wi-Fi device is a sensible extra for a long trip.

Working remotely from a hotel or a car

A lot of a buyer's day happens in transit: factory districts, trains between cities, waiting rooms. Plan your tasks so that the heavy ones happen at the hotel and the light ones in transit. Draft emails offline and send them when a connection is stable. Download any file you need to show a supplier rather than opening it from the cloud in front of them.

If you carry a laptop, our guide to eSIM for laptops and travel routers explains the sharing options and their trade-offs.

If something stops working

  1. Check the basics first: airplane mode off, data roaming switched on for the eSIM line, and the correct line selected for data.
  2. Restart the phone, then check signal in another location; indoor factory halls can have weak reception.
  3. If one app fails but others work, the cause is probably blocking on that service; use your offline copy or an alternative and move on with the meeting.
  4. Contact the eSIM provider's support with your order details, and keep your back-up connection ready while you wait.

Perguntas frequentes

Will my usual email and messaging apps work in China?+

Many foreign services are blocked on local networks, and some roaming eSIM plans route data abroad so they often open. This varies by plan and by service, so nobody can promise it. Test each essential app before you leave and keep an alternative.

Do I need a Chinese phone number?+

Not always. Some services, such as certain deliveries, local apps and payment verification, work better with a local number, and a local SIM may require ID registration. Think about which tasks need one, and ask your suppliers how they prefer to contact you.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot for my laptop?+

Many plans allow it, but some limit or exclude tethering. Check the plan's terms before buying, and remember that sharing uses data faster than phone-only use.

Is hotel Wi-Fi enough for business work?+

It can help for large files at the hotel, but sign-in or limits apply and quality varies by property. It does not cover maps, rides or messages while you are out, so keep your own mobile data as well.
