Resposta rápida

  • Thai passport holders can enter Macau visa-free for up to 30 days, and you pass immigration both when leaving Hong Kong and when entering Macau.
  • You can go by high-speed ferry from Sheung Wan or Tsim Sha Tsui, or by cross-border bus over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge from the HZMB Hong Kong Port near the airport.
  • A Hong Kong-only plan may not work in Macau, so check the plan's country list for Macau before you cross.

Entry to Macau for Thai Travellers

Thai passport holders can enter Macau without a visa for up to 30 days, and the Hong Kong stay is counted separately. The two places run their own immigration, so on the way out you clear Hong Kong exit control and then Macau entry control, and the return trip repeats both.

Your passport must stay valid for the whole stay, and you should carry an onward or return ticket. Keep the passport somewhere easy to reach before you join the queue, and remember that coming back means clearing Hong Kong entry control again.

Entry rules can change. Confirm with the Hong Kong Immigration Department and the Macau immigration authorities before every trip (last checked October 2026).

If you sleep near Sheung Wan or Central, the Sheung Wan ferry is usually the easiest. If you have just landed and not yet checked in, the bus from the port near the airport saves a transfer. Whichever you choose, look up the last return departure before you commit to the day.

  2. 2Late morning: Historic CentreWalk from Senado Square up to the Ruins of St. Paul's, the facade that symbolises the city. The area belongs to the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Macau.
  3. 3Midday: eat localTry Portuguese-style egg tarts and the pork chop bun, two snacks Macau is known for.
  4. 4Afternoon: Taipa VillageCross to Taipa for the small lanes, snack shops and colourful buildings of Taipa Village, a slower pace than the old town.

Old Town and Taipa in Brief

The historic sites sit close together and can be walked in half a day. The wave-patterned paving of Senado Square and the pastel buildings make the mood very different from Hong Kong. The Ruins of St. Paul's are crowded with photographers all day, so go early for a clearer view.

  • Use Senado Square as the starting point for any walk
  • The lane up to the Ruins is lined with small shops selling snacks to take home
  • Taipa Village suits the afternoon; shops and cafes keep different hours, so check them on the map

Before You Join the Queue

  1. Buy the ferry or bus ticket in advance on the operator's own site and keep a screenshot on your phone
  2. Download an offline map and switch your eSIM on before reaching the terminal, because terminal Wi-Fi can be crowded
  3. Carry the original passport rather than a copy and check that the photo page is undamaged
  4. Allow more return time than you think you need, especially on weekends when crossings are busy
  5. If the last sailing or bus is full, keep a backup such as switching to the other crossing

Money and Food

Macau has its own currency, the pataca, but Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted. Change given back is often in pataca, so spend it before you leave or lean on a card. Check rates and card fees with your own bank.

Worth trying are Portuguese-style egg tarts, the pork chop bun and Macanese dishes that blend Portuguese and Chinese cooking. Popular shops queue up, so drop in outside main meal times.

Staying Online in Macau

A plan sold for Hong Kong only may not cover Macau. Open the plan page and read the country list: if Macau is on it you can keep using the same line; if not, pick a plan that names Macau and install it before you fly. For the general data checklist, see “Hong Kong Trip Prep: Checklist, SIM, eSIM and Staying Online”.

Keep data roaming on for the eSIM line and keep your Thai SIM active for bank OTP texts. Always check the plan's terms with the seller (last checked October 2026).

Google Maps, WhatsApp and LINE work normally in Macau. An offline map of the old town helps when signal dips in narrow lanes.

Perguntas frequentes

Perguntas frequentes

Is one day enough for Macau?+

Enough for the historic centre, Taipa Village and a look at Cotai, though it is a full day. Stay overnight or drop one stop if you want a slower pace.

Do I need to change money into patacas?+

Not really, because Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted, but change often comes in pataca, so spend it before heading back.

Will my Hong Kong eSIM work in Macau?+

It depends on the plan. Read the country list on the plan page for Macau and ask the seller if it is unclear.

Should I pick the ferry or the bus?+

Ferries suit visitors staying on Hong Kong Island or in Kowloon; the bridge bus suits those near the airport or Tung Chung.
