Schengen multiple-entry visa and the 2026 visa cascade for Thai nationals
Explains single and multiple entry, the general cascade rule and the Thai cascade announced by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with each embassy still deciding every case.

Resposta rápida
- A Schengen multiple-entry visa allows repeated entries, but stays still total no more than 90 days in any 180-day period.
- The Royal Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the European Commission approved a Visa Cascade for Thai nationals on 8 May 2026, and stresses it is not a visa exemption.
- Even if you meet the conditions, the embassy or consulate of your main destination still decides each application, and nobody can promise a multiple-entry visa.
A Schengen multiple-entry visa lets you enter the Schengen area repeatedly while the visa is valid. The European Commission says holders can enter as often as they like but may stay no more than 90 days in total in any 180-day period. The embassy decides whether to issue one.

What is the difference between single-entry and multiple-entry Schengen visas?
A single-entry visa covers the number of entries stated on it, while a multiple-entry visa allows repeated entries. The 90-in-180-day limit applies to both, and the days and entries printed on the sticker are what count.
- A Schengen visa is generally valid for every Schengen country, 29 in total according to the European Commission.
- The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave; for a multiple-entry visa that means 3 months after you leave the last Schengen country on the trip.
- If the sticker allows fewer than 90 days, follow the sticker.

What is the general Schengen visa cascade rule?
The cascade is a ladder that gives longer multiple-entry visas based on how earlier visas were used. Article 24(2) of the Visa Code (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, consolidated text) sets a general sequence, shown below.
| Visa requested | General Visa Code condition |
|---|---|
| 1-year multiple-entry | 3 visas obtained and lawfully used in the previous 2 years |
| 2-year multiple-entry | A 1-year visa lawfully used in the previous 2 years |
| 5-year multiple-entry | A 2-year visa lawfully used in the previous 3 years |

What is the 2026 visa cascade for Thai nationals?
The Royal Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the European Commission approved a Visa Cascade for Thai nationals on 8 May 2026. It covers Thais who live in Thailand and apply at Schengen embassies or consulates in Thailand. The ministry page was updated on 18 May 2026.
| Visa requested | Condition for Thais per the MFA |
|---|---|
| 1 year | One Schengen visa obtained and lawfully used in the previous 2 years |
| 2 years | A 1-year multiple-entry visa in the previous 3 years |
| 5 years | A 2-year visa in the previous 4 years |
The ministry says the cascade has come into effect but gives no start date, and stresses that "the Visa Cascade is not a Schengen visa exemption". Thais still need to apply for a Schengen visa as usual.

What does "lawfully used" mean, and how does the embassy decide?
Every cascade rule speaks of visas obtained and lawfully used, and the embassy reviews that against the applicant's travel record. Only the embassy can say how it reads the term in a given case.
- Each embassy decides its own applications and may ask for more documents.
- Article 14 of the Visa Code covers the purpose of the trip, accommodation, enough money and the intention to leave before the visa expires.
- No agent or other party can guarantee a multiple-entry visa. Use only the checklist of the embassy or its official visa centre.
How do you apply when you want a multiple-entry visa?
The steps are the same as any Schengen visa: apply to your main destination, no more than 6 months before travel and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before.
- 1Choose where to applyApply to the country where you stay longest; if equal, the one you enter first.
- 2Prepare the embassy's checklistInclude travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospital treatment and repatriation.
- 3Submit and give fingerprintsVisa centres such as VFS Global or BLS handle submissions for some embassies.
- 4Aguardar a decisãoNormally 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 calendar days in some cases.
How does mobile internet matter for visa applications and repeated trips?
Many embassies ask for an online form before the appointment, and you may need a code sent to your phone or email. On later trips with a multiple-entry visa, you still show bookings at the border, so having data as soon as you land helps.
- Keep appointment slips, forms and accommodation proofs as backup files on your phone.
- EES records your facial image at each crossing; you need no internet at the kiosk, but data helps you open documents.
Before each trip, check the visa expiry date, the days left in your 180-day window and your passport validity again, because a multiple-entry visa does not remove any of these limits. Many travellers keep a simple log of entry and exit dates to make this check easier.
