What Taichung is like on a phone

Taichung sits in the middle of the island and is known for weather that stays comfortable most of the year — cooler than the south, drier than Taipei. It is a spread-out place: one district is further from the next than the map makes it feel, which is why locals live on scooters and in cars. Visitors come for the night market by the university, the coffee culture, and as a base for the lake in the mountains. When you land

Most people arrive by high-speed train at Taichung station, which is outside the built-up core and needs a local train or a bus to finish the journey. If you flew into Taichung (RMQ), a smaller field near the coast, switch the eSIM on in the cabin, because you will be working out the onward connection. The ride in crosses low suburbs where factories alternate with rice fields; the line holds, but the map shows a lot of similar-looking roads, so confirm the stop name before you get off.

Where coverage changes

The centre and the main avenues are steady. The night market beside the university, heaving on a weekend, slows at peak hour the way every big market does rather than cutting out. There is no city-wide underground here as in Taipei, so movement happens on the road, which means you spend longer with the map open and meet fewer dead spots. Drive east towards the mountains and the line starts breaking with the valleys, returning at each next village.

A day in town runs about 800MB–1.2GB: less walking than Taipei, but longer stretches of navigation while you are being carried somewhere. Renting a car or a scooter pushes it slightly higher, since the map never closes. On a day that goes up to the lake and back, allow more — you re-route often on mountain roads — and download the mountain map area first so navigation keeps working through the gaps.

• Fengjia — The biggest and most crowded student night market in the city; speeds sag at peak on weekend nights, so open the payment screen before joining a queue and meet people at a lane entrance.
• Xitun — Newer towers, malls and hotels on the west side; wide roads, good signal, and the district most drivers stay in because parking is easier than in the old centre.
• The old town by the station — Older blocks around the local railway station, full of small lanes and long-standing shops; generally fine, though inside some thick-walled old buildings it is weaker than it is out on the street.
• Nantun and the newer districts — Roomy residential sprawl to the south, with big roads and longer distances than you expect; check real travel times before making an appointment, because two points in one district can be half an hour apart.

Day trips out of the city

• Sun Moon Lake — About two hours up by bus on a winding road with intermittent gaps. The lakeside where the hotels are works; parts of the shoreline trail and the cable car waver. Download the ferry timetable before you go up.
• Gaomei wetlands — Coastal wetlands west of the city where everyone goes for sunset; the boardwalk runs out over open flats so there is signal, but speeds drop when the whole crowd arrives at once. Tide times change daily — take them from the official notice before you set out.
• Cingjing and the high mountain road — High-altitude farms on a road that just keeps climbing; the higher you go the patchier it gets, with long stretches of nothing. Save the accommodation address as plain text on the phone, and check road status on the official notices, since closures for works or weather do happen.
