What Taipei is like on a phone

Taipei is a short flight and an unexpectedly easy city to move around, which is why people keep going back — for the night markets, for a concert, or as a base for the mountain towns to the north. The city sits in a basin ringed by hills, so rain arrives faster and more often than most visitors pack for. Coverage across the built-up area is thorough, underground stations included. It starts to change the moment you climb into the ring of hills that surrounds the place.

When you land

Most arrivals come through Taoyuan (TPE), outside the city, and take the airport line or a bus in — roughly forty minutes to an hour. Enable the eSIM in the cabin so you can work out whether to board the express or the all-stations train. Some flights land at Songshan (TSA), inside the city and a step from the metro. On the airport line the track alternates between viaduct and tunnel, so the connection holds for most of the ride with short stumbles underground.

Where coverage changes

The city itself is even, and the metro stations and the pedestrian underpasses work. Night markets under canvas, packed shoulder to shoulder, feel slower at peak hour rather than dropping out. The riverside parks and bike paths are open and good. The real change is the surrounding mountains — the road up Yangmingshan, the stepped trails onto the hills behind the city — where the line fades into the gullies and returns at the open viewpoints.

What a day here costs in data

A sightseeing day runs about 1–1.5GB, with the map always on and restaurant searching happening on the move. Because rain arrives without warning, most people check the forecast several times a day — small each time, but frequent. Filming a night market and posting it on the spot pushes towards 2GB. If two of you travel and one tethers the other, estimate the pair together rather than per handset.

Districts travellers ask about

• Ximending — A pedestrian grid that fills from mid-afternoon to late; well served, though weekend crowds slow it a little, and the underpass to the station is a useful way to dodge a downpour.
• Da'an — Residential blocks and cafés around the big park, quieter than the market districts and smooth to use — a comfortable place to work for an hour or plan the next day over breakfast.
• Xinyi — Towers, malls and the arena; on event nights the crowd concentrates enough to drag speeds in the hour either side of the show, so keep the ticket saved on the device.
• Zhongshan — Bookshops and coffee over a long underground concourse linking several stations; the concourse stays connected end to end and is the rain route locals actually use.

Day trips out of the city

• Jiufen and the Pingxi line — A hillside village and a small railway threading a valley; the line swings with the terrain and weakens between stations, and the stepped alleys slow further when the evening crowd arrives. Check the return times early.
• Yangmingshan — An old volcanic massif above the city, with steaming vents and grassland; the bus up rounds bends where the line fades, while the open viewpoints are strong. Check the park's notices on trail closures, which change with season and weather.
• Yilan and Jiaoxi — Getting there means a very long mountain tunnel, by bus or by train, with several unbroken minutes of nothing; on the far side the east-coast plain brings it all back. Download whatever you need before you enter.
