What Kaohsiung is like on a phone

Kaohsiung is the big southern port, the stop most people make when they take the high-speed line down from Taipei. It feels different from the capital: harder sun, wider roads, a slower pace. Visitors come for the art spaces in the old harbour warehouses, to stage a trip further south to the beaches, or to work with factories in the industrial belt. Coverage across town is thorough, on both the metro and the light rail that loops around the waterfront.

When you land

Most people arrive on the high-speed train at Zuoying in the north of the city and change to the metro, with the line already running since Taipei, so nothing needs doing. Direct flights land at Kaohsiung (KHH), close in and a step from the metro — switch the eSIM on in the cabin for that. Coming down by rail, the route crosses broad plains broken by short tunnels, so the connection holds for nearly the whole ride with brief interruptions.

Where coverage changes

The centre and the metro corridors are even. The converted harbour warehouses are heavy steel and concrete, so inside some of them the line drops even when it is strong on the quay outside. The ferry to the sandbar island is short enough that the signal swings rather than disappears. Around the northern lake with its pagodas and temples the ground is open and easy. In the working port, where containers stack high beside the road, there are scattered dead pockets.

What a day here costs in data

A day here runs about 800MB–1.2GB, below Taipei because the streets are straight and easy to read. What actually spends data is hunting for shade and searching for somewhere to eat, plus the harbour sunset that nearly everyone photographs. Spend an afternoon cycling the waterfront with a route-tracking app open and allow extra for both data and battery — hard sun heats the handset, and a hot phone drains faster than a cool one.

• Yancheng and the old piers — Old warehouses turned into galleries and shops; out on the quay the line is strong, while inside some of the steel-framed halls it softens, so buy exhibition tickets before you step in.
• Zuoying and the Lotus Pond — The northern side, with the high-speed station and a lake ringed by temples and twin pagodas; the lakeside is open and reliable, and a sensible place to check onward train times.
• Sanduo shopping district — Malls and towers in the middle of town over a basement level connected to the station; usable on every floor, with the deepest levels answering a little slower on busy evenings.
• Cijin Island — The sandbar island a short ferry away, with a beach and seafood stalls; it works on the island, though the far end away from the pier weakens, so agree a return sailing time before you wander.

Day trips out of the city

• Kenting — The southern tip, a few hours by bus or car along the coast, with hills and short tunnels that make the line swing on the way. The beach accommodation strip is fine, while some of the capes and lookouts weaken simply because nobody lives near them.
• Meinong and the countryside — Paper-umbrella workshops and rice fields to the northeast; the open fields are served, but the lanes between plots have soft spots, so pin the workshop or restaurant you are heading for before you leave the city.
• Xiaoliuqiu island — Drive south to the ferry port and cross for about half an hour, with the line dimming mid-water; the island's ring road works while the outer beaches waver. Sailings are adjusted for sea conditions, so confirm them before you commit to a return time.
