What OSL is like

Gardermoen is Norway's principal airport, built as a long hall of timber and glass that takes a while to walk end to end but never leaves you guessing where you are. The railway station sits directly beneath the central part of the building, which makes the connection unusually painless for an airport this size. Arrivals split into two clear groups: one takes the train into Oslo in a matter of tens of minutes, the other picks up a car and drives north or west towards the fjords. Those two groups need almost nothing in common from a data plan.

Switch the line on as the wheels touch down; coverage around the airport is good and the network is usually there before you reach the desk. The walk is long but linear, and the signs take you down to the baggage hall and the railway station on the same level. Norway sits outside the European Union while remaining inside the Schengen area, so immigration and customs are two separate questions here and it pays to read the channel signage rather than follow the crowd. If you are collecting a hire car, use the wait at the belt to set your route and download the offline map. The road out of the airport puts you into open country faster than most people expect.

The terminal offers free Wi-Fi behind the usual sign-in page, typically with a capped session. In a building this long the quality is not even along its length, and the crowded waiting zones are noticeably slower than the quiet ends. The limitation that matters is where it stops: it does not follow you down to the railway platform beneath the building, and it certainly does not follow you onto the roads climbing inland. That is where signal genuinely becomes a question, and where a live line rather than a hotspot is the thing keeping your map alive.

From the station under the building both the airport express and ordinary regional trains run to Oslo central, and the difference in journey time is smaller than people assume, with the regional services frequent enough that you rarely need to plan ahead. Tickets are bought on the phone as a matter of course. Drivers face a different problem entirely: the roads inland climb quickly and pass through long tunnels that cut the signal in defined blocks. The train ride into town costs very little data, just a map and a message. A day driving over the mountains can run to several hundred megabytes, because the map works continuously and recalculates every time you come back out into daylight.
