What FUK is like

Fukuoka is the airport Japanese travellers point to when they talk about convenience, because it is close enough that the onward journey barely registers as one. The domestic and international buildings sit on opposite sides of the runway and are linked by a shuttle ride, which is the detail that surprises first-timers. The city is the gateway to the whole of Kyushu, so many arrivals move straight onto a train for somewhere else the same day. Plan for the shuttle and the rest is easy.

Bring the line up on landing and have the on-screen entry paperwork ready before you reach the queue; it is usually shorter here than at the Tokyo airports simply because fewer flights come in. After the belts, the decision point is that the international building has no subway station of its own: you take the shuttle across to the domestic side first. That ride is a normal part of the journey here and is signposted, but it belongs in your timings rather than as a surprise. If you are genuinely in a hurry, a taxi from the doors is not a long trip, because the city really is that close. Tell anyone meeting you which side you will emerge on.

The free Wi-Fi works and rarely struggles, because passenger numbers are moderate, though the usual Japanese terms page stands between you and it. What people overlook is how little time they spend in the building: some are out within twenty minutes of collecting a bag, which gives the Wi-Fi almost no chance to be useful. It also does not follow you onto the inter-terminal shuttle, and that ride is exactly when you want to check train times. Your own line covers the whole sequence without a gap.

The domestic side has a subway station inside the building, and a handful of stops puts you at Hakata, the city's rail hub, from where high-speed services run on to the rest of Kyushu. People heading for the Tenjin district take the same line a few stops further. A taxi makes real sense at this airport because the distance genuinely is short. There is coverage in the subway tunnels, though it thins in places, so leave your route loaded before you go down. The data cost of getting into town here is close to trivial: the trip is over before anything heavy has a chance to load.
