What OKA is like

Naha is an island airport that both receives visitors and ties the smaller islands around it together, with the domestic, international and inter-island operations sitting in one complex linked on foot. A large share of arrivals never go into Naha city at all, heading instead for the rental car pick-ups and straight up the island. Okinawa is where the gap between having a data line and not having one is most obvious, because the trip happens on roads rather than in a city. A map that keeps working matters more here than almost anywhere else in Japan.

Bring the line up on landing, because the first thing many people do here is contact a rental company or work out where the meeting point is. Domestic passengers are out quickly with no immigration to clear; international arrivals go through the usual entry steps. Walking between the buildings is under cover and signposted throughout, though in peak season the baggage area gets busier than newcomers expect. If you have a car booked, have the reservation details and contact number open before you leave the building, because most pick-up points are not directly outside the arrivals doors. Sorting that inside is much easier than sorting it on a kerb in the heat.

The airport Wi-Fi covers the main halls with the usual terms page in front of it, and in peak season, when several flights land together, speed drops because the whole hall is on it at once. The real limitation here is that everything you do next happens outside the building: finding the car pick-up, navigating the coast roads, hunting for parking at a viewpoint. None of that is something the airport network can help with. Treat it as a convenience while you wait for a bag, not as part of your plan for the island.

The monorail from the airport runs into central Naha and past the main shopping streets, which is quick and suits anyone staying in the city, but it does not go north. People heading for the beaches or the aquarium up the island need a rental car or a long-distance bus. Driving here means a map open for most of the day, which uses noticeably more data than sightseeing in a city. Coverage along the main roads is continuous, but it thins on some of the hill and headland stretches. If you are driving a long way, download the map area in advance and let the live line handle the rest.
