What AKL is like

Auckland is where most people enter New Zealand, and very often where they immediately connect onto a domestic flight. The international and domestic buildings are separate and far enough apart that you either walk a marked outdoor path or take a shuttle, a detail that regularly stresses anyone with a tight connection. There is no train from the airport into the central city, so everyone leaves by road. That road is the stretch where a working line stops being a convenience.

Free Wi-Fi covers both buildings behind the usual accept page and is generally fine for checking messages in the arrivals hall. The weak point you actually feel is the open-air path between the terminals, which the network does not follow. If you are walking to the other building while checking whether your connection has moved, that is your own line doing the work. A lot of long-haul services land in the early morning, which is also when everyone tries to join the same network at the same moment. Between those two facts, the airport Wi-Fi is a poor thing to build a tight connection around.

Arrivare in città

Everything into the city goes by road: airport coaches, taxis and app cars, roughly forty minutes to an hour depending on the motorway, which genuinely jams at peak. Maps and a ride app are light on data but need you online the whole way. If the plan is to collect a car and drive north or south immediately, save the route first, because once you are past the suburbs coverage sticks to the highways and the towns along them. The prettiest coastal roads are usually the quietest ones as well. That trade is the whole shape of driving in this country.
