What SYD is like

Sydney is the country's main long-haul gateway, and for many travellers it is the first place an Australian network appears on the screen. The international and domestic sides sit at opposite ends of the runways, so moving between them is a real transfer rather than a walk down one corridor. A great many arrivals land in the early morning off an overnight flight, hours before any accommodation will take them. That gap is spent almost entirely on the phone.

Border control is automated for many nationalities, so the line that genuinely takes time is the biosecurity check at the end, where food, seeds and muddy hiking boots are looked at seriously. Declare honestly rather than guessing, and expect the hall to move in waves as several wide bodies empty at once. Baggage reclaim and that last check sit under the same roof, so you are indoors and on your own data the whole way through. By the time you walk out through the doors, the ride or the train should already be decided.

Both terminals carry free Wi-Fi and it behaves the way airport Wi-Fi usually behaves: a browser page appears, you agree to something, and it works as long as you stay put. Walk towards the train platform or step onto the shuttle between terminals and it quietly stops following you. Sessions tend to expire rather than run forever, and reconnecting while dragging two bags is the moment most people give up on it. A line that is already live on landing removes the whole ritual, which matters most on the morning banks when the hall is full and everyone is reaching for the same network at once.

A train station sits beneath the terminals and reaches the central city in roughly a quarter of an hour, which is why so many arrivals skip the road entirely. Taxis and app cars use marked pick-up areas that are not always on the arrivals level, so read the instruction in the app before you start walking. Maps and a transit app together are light, on the order of a few tens of megabytes for the trip, while booking and tracking a car costs a little more because the map keeps refreshing. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, the transfer between the two sides is the part worth checking live rather than assuming. Save an offline map of the centre anyway, because a rail tunnel is not where you want to discover a dead line.
