What PER is like

Perth is one of the most isolated large cities anywhere, and the airport shows it. Long-haul flights from Asia land here regularly, while part of the domestic side is filled with mine workers flying in and out on rosters. A rail line now runs from the airport into the city, which has made arriving markedly simpler than it used to be. The moment you leave the metropolitan area, though, the gaps between towns are long enough that signal has to be planned for rather than assumed.

Switch the line on straight after landing; the metropolitan network is dense and usually attaches before you reach the checks. Immigration and biosecurity follow the same pattern as the other Australian gateways, with the inspection after the belt taking the longer share of the time. The terminal groups here are further apart than many people expect, so read the signage rather than following the crowd when you change between them. If you are connecting onward to a mining town or a coastal strip, take the gate from the airport's own displays. Everything up to the kerb is indoors and comfortably covered.

Free terminal Wi-Fi works after a sign-in page and is enough to check messages and arrange a car. The limitation you actually feel here is timing: a lot of long-haul services land late at night or very early, and the moment you most want a connection is while you stand outside waiting for a ride. That is exactly where the airport network stops reaching. A line that is already live on landing is worth more on a two in the morning arrival than on a midday one. It also saves you hunting for a seat near a working access point.

Arrivare in città

The train from the airport reaches the central city in about twenty minutes and is the most direct option without a car. Taxis and app cars use the marked ranks and take the main road in. The part that really consumes data is whatever comes next: drive south to the vineyards or north along the coast and the distances between towns are long, with coverage clinging to the highway corridor. Download the whole route in advance and do not rely on a navigation app that needs to be online the entire way. Messaging and a booking here and there cost almost nothing by comparison.

• The terminals really are apart — This is not an airport where you stroll between buildings, so follow the signage and allow proper time for a change of terminal before an onward flight.

• Late arrivals are the real case — Many services from Asia land in the middle of the night, and standing outside at two in the morning without your own line is the situation worth avoiding.
