Hoe Osaka is op een telefoon

Osaka draws people who come to eat, people who come for a ballgame, and people who use it as a base and leave town every morning. The pace is quicker than Kyoto and the map is tighter than Tokyo's — you can genuinely walk from one district to the next. Coverage holds across the built-up area, complicated underground stations included. What is different here is how much of the day you spend below street level, on mall corridors that run for a kilometre without daylight.

The main gateway is Kansai (KIX), built on a reclaimed island out in the bay. Turn the eSIM on before the doors open and check you have bars before you walk down to arrivals. On the train across the bridge the line softens a little over open water and firms up again on the mainland side. Arriving instead by rail, Shin-Osaka is where most people first open a map to work out the hop across to Namba or Umeda.

Underground is the heart of this city: the passages beneath Umeda and Namba link several blocks at a stretch, and while the data line survives down there, your dot on the map drifts because no satellite can see you. Above ground, Shinsekai and Tennoji behave normally, and the bayside around the port and the theme park is open sky and easy going. Ride north into the hills that fringe the prefecture and throughput tapers gently with the distance from dense housing.

A day of walking and eating here costs roughly 1–1.5GB, between restaurant reviews, queue tickets and the constant map check for the correct station exit. A full day at the bayside theme park pushes it higher, because ride-reservation screens refresh often and you take far more photos than usual. Anyone going live from the Kuromon market or filming the neon at midnight should budget nearer 3GB. If you would rather not, batch the uploads onto the hotel Wi-Fi at the end of the night.

• Namba — Three lines' stations knit together below ground and people surface on the wrong side constantly; pick the exit number in the app before you start walking, rather than trusting the compass arrow, which spins underground.
• Umeda — The northern station district stacks department stores and skywalks on top of each other, and the map is usually one floor out; arrange to meet by shop name and floor number instead of dropping a pin.
• Shinsaibashi — The covered arcade runs unbroken for blocks; the signal gets through, but the evening crush makes it feel slower, so open a payment QR before you join the queue rather than at the counter.
• Tennoji — This is the junction people use for the airport run and for trips out of the prefecture, and it is more open than the northern districts, so checking departures or calling a car under time pressure goes more smoothly here.

• Kobe — The coastal run keeps a clean line the whole way, but take the ropeway or climb the hill behind the city for the night view and the bars start dropping off along the slope.
• Himeji — The castle sits a short walk from the station and the streets around it are fine, but inside the keep the thick walls and narrow wooden stairs cut the signal noticeably as you climb.
• Koyasan — A mountain line hands over to a cable car, and the climb itself has long gaps; up top the temple precinct is usable again, but save the map and the last departure time while you are still at the foot of the hill.
