Micronesia eSIM
The Federated States of Micronesia is four quite different states — Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae — strung out over a thousand kilometres, each with its own languages, customs and reason to visit, from wreck diving in Chuuk Lagoon to the stone city of Nan Madol on Pohnpei. Moving between them depends mainly on the Island Hopper, which operates only a few days a week, so sort out documents and how you will connect before you leave rather than on the way.

Most visitors keep their usage light: messages, email and checking flights, mostly over accommodation Wi-Fi in each state's main town. Prepare maps and documents offline, and assume that large uploads of dive footage will be something you do after the trip rather than each night from your room.

There are four gateways, one per state: Pohnpei International (PNI) near Kolonia, Chuuk (TKK) on Weno, Kosrae (KSA), and Yap International (YAP) at Colonia. All sit on the Island Hopper route that links Honolulu and Guam island by island. Outer islands such as Ulithi or the Mortlocks are reached on government ships and irregular light-aircraft services rather than anything you can book like a normal flight.

Workable service sits in each state's main town: Kolonia on Pohnpei, Weno in Chuuk Lagoon, Tofol on Kosrae and Colonia on Yap. Head out along the ring roads, into the interior rainforest on Pohnpei, or onto a boat crossing the lagoon, and it thins quickly. The outer islands of Yap and Chuuk, hundreds of kilometres away, should be treated as offline for the entire time you are there.

Is there an eSIMonline plan for Micronesia?+
Not currently. The Federated States of Micronesia is not in our plan list, so please do not plan on buying one from us for Pohnpei or Chuuk. What we would suggest instead is asking your existing provider about roaming, using accommodation Wi-Fi, and preparing maps and documents offline. If the trip routes through Guam or Hawaii, plans for those destinations cover those legs normally.
Do the states have different rules about visiting sites?+
They differ noticeably. Many places, especially on Yap and around Nan Madol, are land or cultural sites cared for by a community, so visits go through a local guide or need permission arranged in advance, and some carry an access fee paid in cash. Ask your accommodation or operator first, and check each state's entry conditions with the official authorities before you travel, since they are not uniform across the country.
Will I be reachable during a full day diving Chuuk Lagoon?+
Mostly not. The boats leave Weno for wreck sites out in the lagoon, away from the settled shore, so signal is weak or gone for most of the day and returns when you come back in the evening. Answer anything urgent before boarding, tell people at home you will be quiet until nightfall, and keep the dive shop's schedule and number saved on the phone in case the plan changes mid-day.

De meeste pakketten hier starten wanneer de telefoon voor het eerst verbinding maakt met een netwerk op de bestemming, zodat je thuis van tevoren kunt installeren en na landing kunt aanzetten. Elke pakketpagina vermeldt zijn eigen regel.
