What HEL is like

Vantaa was designed as a hinge between Europe and Asia, so a large share of the people inside it never leave the transit side at all. The building works as one continuous structure, and you move between its parts on foot rather than by shuttle. Finland has moved almost all of its everyday services onto the phone, from rail tickets to paying in small shops, which means arriving without a working line is felt quickly rather than eventually. The airport Wi-Fi is free and better than the European average, but it still puts a registration page in front of you, and that page is where people stumble with a handset that has only just come out of airplane mode. For transfer passengers sitting out a long layover it handles light work comfortably, though anyone trying to hold a call will meet some unpredictability in the busiest hours. The familiar limitation applies all the same: it does not follow you down to the platform beneath the terminal, and it certainly does not board the train that is about to take you into the city.

The ring rail service from beneath the terminal reaches Helsinki central in about half an hour, runs frequently, and needs no advance booking. Airport coaches make the same journey to the same part of town. Tickets for either are normally bought in the city transport app, which means being online at the moment of purchase rather than at some convenient point beforehand. The ride itself is light on data. If you are a transfer passenger heading into town to fill a layover, though, budget for half a day of maps and sign translation, which will cost you several times what the journey in does.
