How to apply for an Australian visitor visa online: documents, biometrics and checking your visa
A plain walkthrough of the subclass 600 Visitor visa for Thai passport holders: ImmiAccount, documents, VFS biometrics and VEVO.

Resposta rápida
- Thai passport holders must obtain a Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream, before travelling; they cannot use the ETA or eVisitor.
- Lodge online through ImmiAccount, then give biometrics at an AVAC run by VFS Global, and avoid non-refundable bookings until the visa is granted.
- The visa is electronic with no label; check status and conditions such as 8503 and 8501 on VEVO.
Thai travellers who want to visit Australia for tourism or to see family and friends must apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600), Tourist stream, outside Australia. The application is lodged online through ImmiAccount, run by the Department of Home Affairs. Applicants in Thailand then give biometrics at a VFS Global centre.

Which visa do Thais need, and can they use the ETA?
No. According to the Department of Home Affairs, Thai passport holders are not eligible for the ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651). The route is subclass 600, Tourist stream, which needs no sponsor and no bond.
| Visto | Open to Thais? |
|---|---|
| ETA (subclass 601) | Não |
| eVisitor (subclass 651) | Não |
| Visitor visa 600, Tourist stream | Yes, apply outside Australia |

What documents do you need, and how much money must be in your account?
The Department of Home Affairs asks applicants to show they are a genuine visitor with enough money for the stay. It does not publish one fixed account balance, so prepare evidence that tells the whole story of the trip and answer every question truthfully.
- A valid passport, plus old passports that show travel history
- Bank statements and proof of income
- An employment letter and leave approval, or proof of study
- Itinerary, accommodation and planned tourist activities
- Ties to Thailand, such as job, family or property
- An invitation letter if you are visiting someone

How do you lodge online and give biometrics at VFS?
The Australian Embassy in Bangkok says every applicant in Thailand must complete biometrics unless exempt. Online lodgement is the main route and postal lodgement is not accepted.
- 1Create an ImmiAccountRegister on the Home Affairs site and start a Visitor visa 600, Tourist stream application.
- 2Complete the form and upload documentsAnswer truthfully, attach clear copies, then check the current fee on the official site and pay.
- 3Wait for the biometrics emailYou receive an email asking you to give fingerprints and a photo.
- 4Book an AVAC appointmentBring the email and your passport; VFS charges a service fee. Check current locations when you book; Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket have been listed.
- 5Wait for the decision and check VEVOFollow progress in ImmiAccount and view the visa details on VEVO.
People who cannot lodge online can use the paid Assisted Online Form Filling service at the AVAC, according to the Embassy.

When should you apply, how long does it take, and how long can you stay?
Home Affairs publishes a global visa processing times page, updated monthly. The figures are estimates, not guarantees, so apply well ahead of any plans.
The Tourist stream allows stays of up to 12 months, while the help text says grants are generally 3 or 6 months and sometimes 12. Each case is decided individually and the period may be shorter than requested, so ask for what your trip really needs.
Do not leave this until the last minute. Some papers take time to obtain, such as an employment letter or older bank statements, and biometrics depend on appointment slots at the centre. Also keep file names and scans tidy so uploads go through the first time, and keep a copy of every answer you gave in the form.
How do you check an electronic visa on VEVO, and what are conditions 8503 and 8501?
The visa is linked electronically to the passport you declared. The Embassy says you do not need a copy of the grant notice to enter or leave, but you should check the visa on VEVO, online or in the myVEVO app, and travel on the same passport.
| Condição | O que isso significa |
|---|---|
| 8503 No Further Stay | Stops you applying for most other visas while in Australia |
| 8501 health insurance | You must keep adequate health insurance while in Australia |
Even without condition 8501, buy travel insurance that covers medical costs, because healthcare in Australia is expensive for visitors.
How do internet and your phone matter during the visa process and the trip?
Every step runs on a phone or computer: the biometrics email, document uploads and VEVO checks. Keep the email and number you used reachable, and keep your Thai SIM for bank OTPs with data roaming off.
On arrival, check that your handset supports Triple Zero (000) calls over VoLTE. Networks can block phones that do not, and no SIM or eSIM fixes that; check with Telstra or AMTA. Wi-Fi still works. Download offline maps because remote areas have no coverage.
