Grab, Google Maps and Google Translate: three apps, three different appetites

Three apps do almost all of the damage on a Vietnam trip: Grab, Google Maps and Google Translate. Grab covers both rides and food delivery, and the two behave differently. A ride booking pings your location every few seconds while the driver is en route, then keeps doing so for the whole trip — a light, steady drip. Food delivery is heavier per order, because you are often browsing a restaurant list full of photos, refreshing it more than once, and then tracking a rider's position on a live map for twenty or thirty minutes while you wait. If you order delivery most nights instead of walking out to eat, budget for it the way you would budget for an extra ride every day.

Google Maps left running in the background for a long walk or a bike ride burns comparatively little, because it is mostly text and vector tiles, not photos or video. Street View and satellite view are the exception — switching into either while lost costs noticeably more than the ordinary turn-by-turn view, so save satellite view for when you actually need to see a building rather than just a pin.

Google Translate is the one people underestimate. Typing a phrase costs almost nothing, but pointing the camera at a menu or a sign and letting it overlay a live translation streams data continuously for as long as you hold the camera up. Do this at every meal on a two-week trip and it adds up to real gigabytes, not a rounding error.

The north-south route: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and the signal gaps at Halong Bay and Sapa

A Hanoi-to-Ho-Chi-Minh-City itinerary is a country-length trip, and coverage along it is not uniform. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City themselves are dense cities with solid coverage almost everywhere you would reasonably go, including inside malls and on Hanoi's metro line. The gaps show up once you leave the two big cities for the scenery that usually pulls people off the main route.

Halong Bay is the clearest example: once your boat is out among the limestone islands, signal comes and goes depending on which side of an island you are on, and it can drop out completely for stretches of the cruise. Sapa, up in the mountains near the Chinese border, has coverage in the town centre but weakens fast once you are out trekking through the terraced rice fields, and disappears entirely in some valleys. The Ha Giang loop, if it is on your itinerary, is more remote still, with long stretches of mountain road where you should assume you have no signal at all.

Common mistakes when sizing a Vietnam trip

• Sizing the whole plan around Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and forgetting that a Halong Bay cruise or a Sapa trek barely touches the data at all, so part of the pack goes unused right where you budgeted hardest for it
• Doing the opposite — buying a small pack because half the trip looks signal-dead on a map, then landing back in a big city for the last few days and running dry before the flight home
• Buying a validity that starts counting from activation rather than from arrival, and losing a day or two of the countdown to an early activation at home or a delayed flight
• Assuming a couple or a family can share one phone's data for two sets of maps and two translate apps running side by side, with no allowance made for tethering at all
• Treating the last day like a normal travel day, when in practice it is spent mostly on a shuttle bus or in an airport lounge with its own Wi-Fi, so the gigabytes budgeted for it go spare

eSIM versus a physical SIM bought at the airport

Vietnam's airports sell physical SIM cards at counters past immigration, and comparing them fairly against an eSIM comes down to what you are optimising for, not which one is 'better' in the abstract.

A physical SIM bought at the airport gets you a local number and, once it is activated at the counter, a network connection before you have even left the terminal. The trade-offs are the counter queue, which can run long right after a bank of international flights lands, and the physical swap itself: you hand over your existing SIM, someone else's card goes into your phone's tray, and you are relying on a stranger behind the counter to set it up correctly before you walk away.

An eSIM installs before you fly, so you can have it live and tested on your home Wi-Fi days ahead of departure, with your regular SIM staying in the phone the whole time — no queue, no tray, no risk of losing a physical card in a pocket. It suits anyone who wants to land, turn the phone on, and already have data working for a taxi or a hotel check-in message. The one thing it does not give you is a local phone number to hand out, which matters if you specifically need a Vietnamese number rather than just a data connection — in that case, the airport counter is the one doing something an eSIM does not.

If data is running low mid-trip, deal with it early

If your data looks like it will run out with days still to go, deal with it before it hits zero rather than after. Open your phone's data usage screen and check how much is left against how many days remain. If the numbers already look wrong, it is far easier to fix from a café with working Wi-Fi than from a moving taxi with no signal.

• Switch heavy habits to Wi-Fi first. Hotels, cafés and most restaurants in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offer it, and it costs you nothing to check the app you were about to open over mobile data on Wi-Fi instead
• Turn off background app refresh and automatic photo backup for the rest of the trip, since neither needs to happen the moment a photo is taken
• Top up the plan you already have rather than buying a second eSIM profile, if the plan supports it. Check the product page or ask us, since swapping profiles mid-trip risks losing the connection you are trying to save
• If you are heading somewhere with weaker coverage in the next day or two, spend the data you have left downloading offline maps now, while the signal is still good, rather than saving it for later
