The airport has several terminals and airlines are spread across them, so a transfer you booked is tied to the terminal you land at rather than to the airport as a whole. The stretch that actually needs a working connection is the few minutes right after customs. After that the day is usually someone else's driving.

None of that works well on a connection you are still trying to set up.

The free Wi-Fi covers the halls, but it wants you through a sign-in page and tends to hand out time-limited sessions that you then have to renew. The real catch is that the place you most need to be online is outside the building, on the pavement where transfers wait, and the Wi-Fi does not reach there. The halls are also busy from early morning to late evening, so whatever speed you get is unpredictable rather than bad. A line that came up by itself on descent means you never have to stand in the heat hunting for a hotspot.

The beach hotel strip is a short drive away, but plenty of people are heading much further, down the coast to smaller towns, and that can be well over an hour with quieter stretches of road the closer you get to Tulum. App-based cars have had shifting restrictions around here, so it is not something to build a plan on. On the drive you will mostly be watching your position on a map, messaging the hotel that you are close, and perhaps booking somewhere for dinner. None of that is heavy, but all of it wants a line that does not drop out halfway along the coast road.
