Rio is a city with granite mountains standing in the middle of its residential districts, so getting across town means going through tunnels repeatedly — and that terrain bears directly on the signal. Visitors spend their time on the beaches, at the summit viewpoints and walking the old quarter, and each gives a different experience of the network. Along Copacabana and Ipanema the line is continuously usable on an ordinary day, but when the sand fills up the speed drops noticeably, because everyone is posting at once.

Most international flights land at Galeão (GIG) north of the city, while a great many domestic ones use Santos Dumont (SDU) right beside the centre. Turn the eSIM on in the immigration queue and check that data roaming is enabled before leaving the building. The run in from Galeão uses expressways and several tunnels, so the line cuts in and out along the way — that is normal. Save your accommodation's address on the device so you can show a driver without depending on a live map load.

The southern beach districts — Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon — are continuously usable on a normal day. The tunnels linking districts cut the line for short stretches, plainly noticeable from a car. The cable car to Sugarloaf usually holds a signal because the whole bay is in view; the summit with the great statue works too but slows right down when the trains deliver several loads of visitors at once. The coast road west and the trails through the forest inside the city have genuinely weaker stretches — download the maps beforehand.

An ordinary day of beach walking, crossing town by car and taking plenty of photos tends to run about 1.5–2GB, most of it the map left open and the uploads. Filming from a viewpoint and sending it straight away climbs much faster, so keep those for the room's Wi-Fi. Strong sun on the sand heats the handset and drains it faster than usual, which makes a power bank as important as whatever data you have left.

• Copacabana and Ipanema — A long promenade with a good line throughout, though on packed weekends the speed falls plainly even at full bars — agree a meeting spot in advance.
• Santa Teresa and Lapa — A hillside of winding lanes and an old tram where the line works but the GPS fix wanders, thanks to the gradient and the close-packed houses — remember the street name when calling a car.
• Centro and the old port district — Office towers and new museums with a good weekday line, but the district empties at weekends with the shops shut — plan your way back before you go.
• Barra da Tijuca — A spread-out newer seaside district built around driving; the main roads are good, but further west along the shore it thins.

• Petrópolis in the mountains — The climb is full of bends and tunnels that cut the line in patches; the town itself is fine. Download the route beforehand and allow time for the return, since fog can settle thickly in some seasons.
• Ilha Grande by boat — A drive south then a boat; the line softens out on the water. On the island the harbour village works while the cross-island trails go completely quiet — download maps and note the return boat times before you land.
• Paraty on the green coast — A beautiful coast road with sections hemmed by mountain and forest where the signal genuinely goes; the cobbled old town works. Fill the tank and download the route before setting off.
