  • Sort three things before you fly: entry documents (check the official source, not an old post), how you will pay, and internet that works from the moment you land. A local SIM bought on arrival and an eSIM installed before the flight differ mainly in how smooth the first hour is.
  • Big cities such as Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City usually have good coverage, while remote areas can differ. Plans and prices change over time, so check the live price before you buy.

Before you book: what to check first

The first item is your passport and entry conditions. Visa rules, exemptions and any advance forms can change, so do not trust figures from articles or old posts. Open the official Vietnamese embassy or immigration website and compare it with your own travel dates.

If you have never travelled abroad, read our general checklist alongside this page and add the Vietnam-specific details here.

Choosing internet: local SIM, eSIM or roaming

All three work; they differ in hassle and trade-offs. A local SIM gives a local number but you buy it on arrival and may need to register with your passport. An eSIM can be installed before you fly and needs no shop visit, but it is data only with no phone number. Roaming is the easiest, but you must read your Thai carrier's terms closely.

If you are unsure your phone supports eSIM, use our device checker. Choosing a Vietnam plan in detail has its own guide, so we do not repeat it here.

Apps to check before you board

Ride-hailing, map and payment apps you know from Thailand may not work, or may need different setup, in Vietnam, and which services work changes over time. The safe method is to open each app you plan to use before you fly: confirm you can log in, that it shows your destination city, and that it does not get stuck on an SMS verification step.

  • Check whether your chosen ride-hailing app serves the cities you are visiting and which payment methods it accepts
  • Download offline maps of each city in case the signal drops in alleys
  • Screenshot your accommodation address and booking number
  • Set up a translation app and download the language in advance

Related topics (apps that do not work abroad, offline maps and translation apps) are covered in the guides linked at the end of this page.

Money and paying

Do not rely on a single way to pay. Carry more than one card, keep some backup cash, and confirm your cards are enabled for overseas use. Conversion fees, cash-withdrawal fees and exchange rates differ by bank and card, so open your own bank's fee schedule instead of guessing from other people's posts.

When a shop or machine asks whether to pay in local currency or baht, read the currency-conversion section of our card-charges guide before deciding.

A simple plan for your first hour

  1. 1Get data on as you landIf an eSIM is installed, switch off airplane mode and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, as in our roaming on/off guide.
  2. 2Confirm the signal is realLoad a web page or map. If it does not load, restart the phone or reselect the network.
  3. 3Set your destination and the way into townUse the airport's official signage and services to see ways into the city, and compare real prices on screen, not figures from articles.
  4. 4Message your accommodationTell them your approximate arrival time through the channel named in your booking.

In the main cities: Da Nang, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City

In big cities you can usually get around with ride-hailing apps, taxis or public transport, but convenience depends on the area and time of day. If you are visiting several cities, decide whether you will fly or go overland, and have data on before you leave your hotel rather than hunting for it at the station.

If your route mixes big cities with small towns or mountains, expect signal to vary, and download maps and tickets in advance.

Staying online during the trip

If you choose an eSIM, you can buy and install it on the web, get the QR by email, use no app, and keep your Thai SIM for calls and SMS. Plans and prices are live, so open the Vietnam page for current details before deciding.

If you are unsure how much data you need, use the data calculator to estimate from your own habits.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Câu hỏi thường gặp

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?+

It depends on your nationality, length of stay and purpose, and the rules can change. Check with the official Vietnamese embassy or immigration authority before booking flights.

Which is easier, a Vietnam SIM or an eSIM?+

An eSIM is easier because you install it before you fly and it works on landing, but your phone must support it and there is no phone number. A Vietnam SIM gives a local number but must be bought on arrival. Choose by whether you will need local calls often.

Can one plan cover Da Nang, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City?+

A nationwide plan usually works in every city, but coverage details vary by plan. Read the plan page and check its coverage description before buying.

Can the ride-hailing app I use in Thailand work in Vietnam?+

Some apps operate in several countries and some do not, and conditions change. Open the app before you fly and try setting a pickup point in your destination city to see if the service exists.

Do I need to turn on roaming when using an eSIM?+

Usually yes, for the eSIM line, because the network is not your phone's home network. Turn data roaming off on your Thai SIM to avoid accidental charges. The steps are in our roaming on/off guide.

When should I buy an eSIM?+

You can buy and install it before flying while you have Wi-Fi to scan the QR, then activate on arrival. Check on the plan page how the plan's usage period starts.

Can I get Thai bank OTPs with a travel eSIM?+

A travel eSIM is data only, so SMS usually arrives on your original Thai SIM. If you need OTPs, keep the Thai SIM on and check its SMS roaming terms with your carrier. See our SMS and OTP guide.
