About 1–2GB a day for maps, ride-hailing and messaging, and more on train days when you stream something to pass the time.
When you land
Almaty (ALA) and Astana (NQZ) are the main gateways, with international flights also into Shymkent (CIT), Aktau (SCO) and Atyrau (GUW). Overland, the Korday crossing from Kyrgyzstan is the common one, and international trains arrive from Russia and Uzbekistan. Get the line running before you leave arrivals so you can order a car in an app rather than take one at the door.
Where coverage changes
Almaty, Astana, Shymkent and the other cities are covered throughout. The intercity highways that run for hundreds of kilometres across open steppe, overnight trains, the canyon and lake country around Charyn and Kolsai, and the desert of Mangystau near Aktau all drop out for long stretches.

Do local apps need a Kazakh phone number?+
Ride-hailing apps such as Yandex Go and inDrive accept a foreign number, but they verify it with an SMS code that a data-only eSIM cannot receive. The easiest approach is to register and log in with your Thai number before you travel; once you arrive, the app runs over data and does not need another SMS.
How do I pay — do I need a local banking app?+
The popular Kazakh finance apps are tied to a local bank account and local identity documents, so visitors cannot open one. Shops and restaurants in the cities widely accept foreign cards and ATMs are common. Carry at least two cards from different banks plus some cash for bazaars and small towns, where cash is sometimes the only option.
Is there signal on the overnight Almaty–Astana train?+
In patches: near towns and stations you have service, but crossing long empty stretches of steppe in the middle of the night there is often nothing for hours. Download films, music and your ticket before boarding, charge everything because sockets in the carriage are limited, and tell your hotel your arrival time before you set off.
What should I prepare for hiking at Kolsai or Charyn?+
These are several hours from Almaty and the signal goes once you drop into the valleys. Download the area in 2GIS or another offline map app before you set out, agree a clear time and pickup point with your driver, tell your accommodation when you expect to be back, and carry a power bank — photos plus GPS all day drain a phone fast.

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
