When you land
The main gateway is Bandaranaike International (CMB) at Katunayake near Negombo, with Mattala (HRI) in the south and Ratmalana (RML) handling some regional flights. Switch the eSIM on before you leave the terminal so you can order a car in an app instead of negotiating at the door.
Where coverage changes

Is there signal on the Kandy–Ella train?+
Not the whole way. Around stations and villages there is service, but climbing through tea estates, tunnels and deep valleys it comes and goes. If you plan to film, record first and upload once you reach your guesthouse, and keep a screenshot of your ticket or seat in case the conductor asks while you are offline.
Is it better to book tuk-tuks in an app?+
Usually yes: apps such as PickMe show a distance-based fare and the route actually driven, so you are not negotiating every time. In the cities there are drivers all day; in small towns or late at night the app may show nothing, in which case ask your guesthouse for their regular driver and keep the number for later on a chat app.
Do I need to do the entry authorisation before flying?+
Do it before you fly, through Sri Lanka's official immigration site, and save the confirmation as a screenshot on the phone. Signal in the arrivals hall can be poor and airport Wi-Fi needs its own sign-in. Having the eSIM already active helps if an officer asks for something you need to pull up or correct on the spot.
Is there signal on safari at Yala or Udawalawe?+
There is some near the gates and the villages around the parks, but deep inside you can be offline for hours. Agree the time and pickup point with your driver before you set off, save the number on the phone, and download the area in your map app first. Upload the photos and clips once you are back at the lodge.
When does a Sri Lanka eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
