How much data you actually need
A normal trip runs about 700MB to 1.5GB a day, because the hill roads are poorly signposted and the map stays open, on top of checking ferry times and posting beach photos. If you film snorkelling and upload each night, budget nearer 2GB a day.
When you land
The main airports are Cyril E. King (STT) on St. Thomas and Henry E. Rohlsen (STX) on St. Croix. St. John has no airport at all: you reach it by ferry from Red Hook or Charlotte Amalie into Cruz Bay, and regular boats also cross to the British Virgin Islands. Switch the line on inside the terminal, since the taxi queue and the next sailing are both things you want to check before you walk outside.
Where coverage changes
Signal is solid around Charlotte Amalie, Red Hook, Cruz Bay and the towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted on St. Croix. It thins inside Virgin Islands National Park on St. John — the Reef Bay trail and the valleys behind Coral Bay in particular — on the open eastern end of St. Croix, and out in the channel while the ferry is between islands.

If I have a United States plan, does it cover these islands?+
Not always. Even though this is U.S. territory, every provider draws its destination boundaries differently: some bundle the Virgin Islands with the mainland, others treat them as a separate destination entirely. The only reliable check is the coverage list on the plan page itself before you buy, and if the U.S. Virgin Islands are not named there, assume they are not included.
Can I use the same plan on a day trip to the British Virgin Islands?+
Usually not, because they are separate destinations even though the crossing takes under an hour. Once the boat is in British waters your phone tries to attach to networks on that side, which sit outside your plan. If you are staying overnight, look for a plan that names the British Virgin Islands directly; for a there-and-back day trip, many people simply keep data off while on that side and pick it up again back on St. Thomas.
What if I lose signal hiking in the park on St. John?+
It is normal in the interior valleys. The fix is to download the whole St. John map area before you leave Cruz Bay, save your parking spot and your return time on the device, and tell somebody which trail you are walking. Service usually returns once you climb back onto a ridge or reach the main road, so a silent phone is not by itself a reason to turn around.
When does a U.S. Virgin Islands eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
