Eritrea eSIM
Eritrea has to be planned as an offline trip from the outset. Asmara is a highland city famous for its modernist architecture, while Massawa sits on the Red Sea at the bottom of a long, winding descent from the escarpment. Travelling outside Asmara requires a paper permit arranged in advance rather than anything online, and internet access for visitors is very restricted. Anyone going should expect to be in touch with home only in occasional windows.

Asmara International (ASM) is the main gateway and sees only a handful of flights a week, with Massawa (MSW) and Assab (ASA) as the other airports. By sea, the port of Massawa is where boats leave for the Dahlak archipelago. Land borders open and close depending on the regional situation, so check with an embassy or your operator beforehand, and carry every document as a paper copy.

In practice you should treat connectivity in Eritrea as limited everywhere. Asmara has the most options but they are neither fast nor consistent, and once you head out towards Keren, Massawa, the Qohaito plateau, the Dahlak islands or the Danakil in the south, assume there is nothing at all. Save maps, tickets and your travel permit to the device and carry printed copies of all of them as well.

Yes. Travel beyond the Asmara area requires a permit arranged in advance, and it is a paper document you show at checkpoints along the road, not something you file online. Ask your operator or your hotel to start the process on your first day, allow several days for it, and photograph the permit so you also have a copy on the phone.
What should I prepare before entering the country?+
Make everything work offline. Download maps of Asmara and the road down to Massawa, save your accommodation address, contact numbers and every ticket to the device, and carry printed copies of the important documents. Bring enough cash, since foreign cards are of very limited use, and agree with people at home that you will check in periodically rather than daily.
