Eritrea has to be planned as an offline trip from the outset. Asmara is a highland city famous for its modernist architecture, while Massawa sits on the Red Sea at the bottom of a long, winding descent from the escarpment. Travelling outside Asmara requires a paper permit arranged in advance rather than anything online, and internet access for visitors is very restricted. Asmara International (ASM) is the main gateway and sees only a handful of flights a week, with Massawa (MSW) and Assab (ASA) as the other airports. By sea, the port of Massawa is where boats leave for the Dahlak archipelago. Land borders open and close depending on the regional situation, so check with an embassy or your operator beforehand, and carry every document as a paper copy.

In practice you should treat connectivity in Eritrea as limited everywhere. Asmara has the most options but they are neither fast nor consistent, and once you head out towards Keren, Massawa, the Qohaito plateau, the Dahlak islands or the Danakil in the south, assume there is nothing at all.
